Skyfire

The Three Skyfires of Miranelle are a trio of the highest-ranking clerics in the order. They reside at the temple in Geldereth and are named after the three children of Miranelle—the Simrae Adurien, Valedith, and Cadain.

Adurien

Adurien was the eldest son of Miranelle, his name meaning "truth." He always felt a responsibility to be perfectly honest with his brother and sister, never withholding anything he learned which he deemed important, even when it conflicted with their previously held beliefs. He focused on moral truths which were either self-evident or directly revealed by Evendur.

Valedith

Valedith was Miranelle's only daughter and her middle child. "Light" was the meaning of her name, as she was the bringer of clarity and peace among her people. She aimed to reveal as much as possible about the world by learning as much as possible. For this reason she has at times been compared to Ebium. Her focus was on the gathering of observable truths about the physical world in particular.

Cadain

Cadain was Miranelle's youngest, his name meaning "hope." He saw the world as it was, apprehending all the knowledge he could, and always finding reason to believe that good would triumph—if not in every situation, at least in the end, when it really mattered. He applied the truth he saw and learned to see that it always pointed towards what was beautiful and good.

Requirements

Traditionally, the Three Skyfires have only ever been elves, dwarves, or gnomes, as the youngest Skyfire in history was 218 years old at the time of appointment. However, there is no official age or species requirement. Theoretically, a sufficiently wise and learned human could be chosen. However, there is a requirement of a minimum thirty years spent serving Evendur as a cleric of Miranelle before this rank can be achieved.

Appointment

When a Skyfire dies, or, rarely, resigns, and a new one must be chosen, the remaining Skyfires call a council of every archcleric in Ekaia, most of whom are at the Gelderell temple at any given time. Once they are all gathered, they begin a council wherein they recount their exploits since the previous council to one another and answer a series of questions put to them by the current Skyfires as to how they would act were they to be appointed. Each archcleric submits in writing his or her own opinion of who should be chosen, but the decision is ultimately in the hands of the remaining Skyfires, who will have to work with whomever is chosen. In a case where no Skyfires remain and three brand new ones must be chosen, which has happened one time in the history of the order, they are elected by the archclerics from among their own ranks.   During the appointing ceremony, the name is conferred upon the individual receiving the title. This is done without regard to gender. This ceremony is conducted in the observatory.

Duties

"We shall love the Light, seek the Truth, and fight for Hope
This we swear"
part of the Skyfires' vows

Each Skyfire is carefully chosen to exemplify the philosophy of the corresponding Simra. The most important duty of the Skyfires is the safeguarding of the secrets of the stars which have not already been revealed to the world. There were five in total--the first is the presence of the stars, of light in the darkness. This truth is so ancient and so universal now that it is frequently taken for granted. The rest still remain hidden.   Upon the selection of a Skyfire, that person travels to Allor Amasa, the tallest mountain in Thessélias, escorted by five other clerics of Miranelle. They travel alone to the top of the mountain, to a sacred place known as the Sanctum of the Heavens. Here they meditate for four days, one for each of the secrets, and during this time the secrets are revealed to them. When they return to the temple, the appointing ceremony is conducted, during which they receive their name and recite their vows. After this, they are officially considered a Skyfire.   The Skyfires, in addition to guarding the secrets, have always been the last line of defense against physical threats. They themselves are defended by a force of clerical guards, but when powerful enemies have made it necessary, the Skyfires have taken up arms to protect the temple.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The Skyfires wear distinctive silver robes with large hoods. Adurien's is trimmed with white, Valedith's with orange, and Cadain's with blue.
