The Mistlands Massacre

It seems the unwilling helpers of the Silent Scream had a few tricks of their own. Maybe they intended for the decennial Twilight Shade pilgrimage to prevent the Lynx family from entering the Rift. Maybe they wanted the timing to prevent harvesting of the sacred life found in the Twilight Shade. What occurred nearly threw all of Eilea into a holy war.   Once each decade, Mubari pilgrims observe the fortification celebration in preparation for a fasting descent into the Twilight Shade. The pilgrimage this decade was exceptionally large, numbering nearly 1600 supplicants. The silent, single file procession was approaching the ravine that served as their traditional entrance into the Rift, when they heard the scraping, grunts and cursing of what could only be other humans ascending from the ravine. As none knew of the Twilight Shade except its protectors the Mubari were aghast at the violation of this most sacred of places.   Mubari hunters in the procession silently passed the signal back along the line. The pilgrimage was halted as 139 hunters formed a loose circle around entrance to the ravine. A whip-thin bedraggled group of 27 explorers slowly appeared dragging four heavily laden sledges. Placed in a place of prominence on the top of the final sledge was the obvious, freshly slaughtered pelt of a midnight claw, the Mubari god of the Twilight Shade.   The ring of hunters closed around the as yet unaware explorers, then quietly approached, closing the noose, and slaughtered all of the intruders with the hooked machete that is standard equipment for any entering the Rift.   There were no Mubari casualties. There were no Lynx survivors. The dead were examined and found to all share the Lynx brand. One sorrowful supplicant from the group of hunters was chosen to skip this decade's descent into the Twilight Shade, and instead return to the Hrinman and notify the senate of what had transpired.

The Conflict

Prelude

With the help of the Silent Scream in obtaining the Map of Tears and enough reference points to determine an entry point, the Lynx family decided in 1932 CE to embark on an ill fated expedition into the the unknown depths of the Rift.

Deployment

A traditional Mubari pilgrimage is a mixture of indeterminate classes and occupations from Mubari society. When a pilgrimage is announced thousands will participate, forming a single file procession over a mile long. When the pilgrims realized they were approaching an unknown, trespassing group ascending from the Rift's depths, hunters quickly organized them. They quietly surrounded the head of the ravine and closed around the group, completely encircling them.

Battlefield

The Lynx family expedition was ascending a washout ravine into the Mistlands. The Mubari Pilgrimage surrounded the egress, the land level and thickly fogged, with thick copses of thin trunked trees.

Conditions

The time was mid-morning, but the thick mists and fog kept everything in a dim twilight. The ground was firm, but damp. Moisture dripped from all of the flora. The pilgrimage followed a narrow, well marked path. The Lynx explorers ascended a slope of loose scree.

The Engagement

The battle was immediate and decisive. With over a hundred hunters, and hundreds of supporting pilgrims, the violators were executed without opportunity for explanation once they had left the sacred confines of the Twilight Shade.
