The Revenir - Suceran Ascendance Rites
Death is just the beginning - not the end.
During the suceran sacred rites of revenir, the loved ones and family of those left behind gather together to lend their magic and strength of will to help guide the departed through the spiritual wilds of the Ethereal. It is a practice rooted in practicality, as the sucera have long been aware of the cyclical nature of magical power and spiritual force.
While often led by the clan elder, revenir can be initiated by anyone. Each clan has a unique invocation, but what matters most is the intent behind the words. Spiritual ascendance is an integral part of suceran culture, with their entire society and magical training system built around the cultivation and protection of an individual's spiritual well-being. Stories and legends told to children revolve around the great deeds of their ancestors, and of the even greater rewards that followed in the afterlife.
The Ethereal and all of it's beings - including demons and dark spirits - are venerated among the sucera. They are seen as the victors in the great pursuit of spiritual awakening. Suceran's capable of experiencing the ethereal plane, whether through as the Dreaming or through other senses, are viewed as particularly gifted individuals and treated accordingly.
At death, however, each suceran - regardless of how they lived their lives - is granted revenir. Those with strong wills to live, strong magic, or a strong sense of self typically retain some facet of their former selves as their spiritual essence enters the Dreaming and joins the flow of the Ethereal. When accompanied by the power and will of those who love them, such spirits may survive intact long enough in the Ethereal to take on a new form. Those who do not are consumed by more powerful beings.
