The Alfather Myth in Eien | World Anvil

The Alfather

The primordial being, the embodiment of entropy and chaos, the original source of magic. The Alfather has a variety of names and roles in Eienic society, but the most important is His role as the progenitor of the true-gods. In his role as the Father of Gods, the Alfather sought to discipline his children following their open rebellion at the end of the First Age. Fearing his wrath, the true-Gods tricked the Alfather into occupying the space beyond Eien, then sealed the world against his power and influence.

Since then, the Alfather has stewed in the miasma of Beyond, seeking to return to the world his children stole from him. Failing that, he will see that it is destroyed.

Followers of the Alfather are best described as anarchists. They embrace chaos and see little value in adhering to the dogma of the prevailing religions. They are often found on the bloody path of magic and summoning, their core ethos stating that all beings are in service to the Alfather whether they know it or not. Enslaving Ethereal beings and causing Dragons to fall into Depravity is the central mission of the Alfather’s adherents - when they can be manipulated into actions for the cause.

Organization in the faith is decentralized to small circles of believers. A constantly moving and changing court of senior faithful - typically priest-mages and summoners - can sometimes be pinned down to a region for several years, but they rarely stay in one place - or together - for long. Their single guiding force seems to be a series of texts, diligently copied and recopied over the years, with the head ‘priest’ of each circle known as a ‘Scribe of the Alfather.’ Each circle is in possession of one of these precious texts, with the knowledge of previous Scribes added to the book and later shared with other circles. Distortion of the Alfather’s written word has been inevitable, not that any Scribe would admit to such a thing.

Fascinating lore, and it will be interesting to see a world influenced by such anarchists!
