Royal Academy of Larane

Power rests in the hands of the mighty - and the hands steering the great intellectual juggernaut of Larane are a force to be reckoned with.

In theory, the King of Larane stands at the pinnacle of authority within the Academy, but in practice - it is the influential Board of Elders who occupy that lofty summit. The Board bears a strong organizational resemblance to the Coucil of Dragons (themselves 'elders' of their species) and maintains a similar sense of gravitas during their meetings.

Structure

A interdisiplinary Board of Elders oversees the Academy; making decisions on resource allocations, mediating personnel disputes and serving as the final appeal board when a student is facing expulsion from their cohort. The Board of Elders is co-equal with the Provost's Office, a position the serves at the pleasure of the King of Larane, whereas the Board is selected through vote by senior teachers and researchers.

Provost’s Office

The Provost oversees all aspects of the Academy, with four Deans reporting directly to the Provost as representatives of their school. An independent Board of Training & Assessment administers all final tests and graduation practicals for the Academy, with their findings being reported directly to the Provost in cases of suspected cheating.

Culture

The culture of the Royal Academy is a vibrant blend of tradition, curiosity, and innovation. Steeped in values and principles that are thousands of years old, the academy fosters an environment that encourages intellectual growth and research for the greater good. Students are inducted into the fabric of Academy life through a series of policies and activities in their first month that wean them off of familial and/or social attachment quickly.

The pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence is at the core of the academy's culture. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves, think critically, and excel in their chosen disciplines. Distractions are eliminated, either by the student or by their teachers, and interference from outside the Academy (typically wealthy families) is strictly monitored and discouraged.   The Academy fosters a culture of collaboration between students and faculty from different fields. This interdisciplinary approach encourages a holistic understanding of the world and sparks innovative ideas. Students are expected to take classes in other areas and it is not uncommon for students to change trajectories as they continue their studies. Seeking a transfer is never punished, nor is it discouraged.   While the Academy embraces innovation with both hands, it also respects the rich cultural traditions found across the world as well as within the country it was founded in. Ancient rituals, ceremonies, and customs are preserved and observed, creating a sense of continuity and belonging across racial and species boundaries. Most major holidays from most major religions on Eien are observed by the Academy, with the powerful Department of Interspecies Diplomacy overseeing the organization's social calendar.

Public Agenda

The primary goal of the Academy is to push the boundaries of magical and scientific knowledge. It strives to be at the forefront of research, exploration, and experimentation in both fields. The Academy aims to contribute valuable insights to the understanding of the natural world, magical phenomena, and their interconnections.

Less well known, yet still heavily criticized, is the Academy's controlling stance on materials and artifacts it has gathered. Despite evidence of past indiscretions and outright theft of valuable cultural and economic property, the Academy maintains that since they are the eminent educational institution in the modern world, such artifacts may best serve future generations in their possession.

Knowledge through pursuit of Excellence.
