Village of the Aiho

Eidmaharia: World of Dreams 81-Bruma 495
The Aiho are an isolated culture situated on a northern hemisphere island surrounded by volcanos.

Culture

Aiho culture is informed by their livelihood. They make a modest living on the shores of a cove inside the Ring of Fire. They have small gardens and gather wood for building and paper making in the jungle. Fish do not live close to the island, and the island has no larger animals are fit for consumption. Fishermen must leave the island for weeks or months at a time to reach fishable waters.   The entire village sees the fisherman off, and when they return, there is a great festival, where fish is cooked and prepared for curing.   Children are cared for in a communal nature, learn to swim early in the warm waters of the cove, and are early apprenticed to a trade in boat building, paper making, tool making, fishing, gathering, or to the Temple of Union.   The Temple passes down through one family. They record the history of the village, preach the word of the Fire King and are charged with blessing of boats and buildings. When a Manali is born, they are charged with the Manali’s care and the ritual of Union. The Temple family is considered the leaders of the village.   Travel is discouraged. The jungle is not safe, though the Aiho don't have a clear reason why, only that something attacks villagers in the jungle. The Temple keeps careful family records for marriage. Fishermen will often bring goods and visit other islands for trade, but Aiho in the village almost never leave. The fishermen are very secretive about their of island excursions and do not regularly bring back anything other than fish, instead using island goods to play for drink and entertainment.
