Nidhogg, the Sun Eater

Written by The Scarlet Queen

"We came together in search of power. At first, we were at odds. Then we grudgingly became allies. Then we became one. In body, mind and most importantly in soul."

-Caledor Tal'therin-

He Who Ate The Sun: The definition of a devourer is someone who eats greedily or voraciously. In the case of Nidhogg this statement barely scratches the surface. During the Great Crashing, the body of the red elder dragon fell from the heavens and landed among the forests of a continent, power radiated from the beast and as it came to consciousness it looked around, its belly ached and it starved, not simply for the flesh and meat of another being, but for the soul and spiritual energy that he could see through his right eye. The beast snarled and began to rip every creature it could find consuming their souls one at a time. The world in its primordial state lived in a constant state of sunlight, with two suns constantly revolving there was never a moment of rest for the world as it was constantly showered with energy from above. Nidhogg could feel the energy of the primordial sun, its energy was nearly infinite. Nidhogg flew into the sky as high as he could reaching the void of the heavens and inhaled focusing the will of the eye in his body that had accumulated the strength of many souls. Through this, the primordial sun was pulled into his body and he consumed it, creating the first Eye of Power. Nidhogg returned to the ground his hunger satiated and he was crowned the King of Dragons among his siblings, and earned the title "The Sun Eater". Through Nidhogg's conquest of power did the other elder dragons come to learn how to grow their own strength, each one growing stronger and stronger through the wisdom Nidhogg imparted to them, but try as they might, Nidhogg always remained the strongest of the brood. Fafnir became jealous of the power and position her brother had over her, she believed she deserved to be the queen. Through great deception, Fafnir turned all the other siblings on Nidhogg and they battled in the sky. Nidhogg was almost able to completely subdue his siblings, but the youngest of the brood, Midgardsomr struck Nidhogg and drained his very strength, his power sucked into a void and into oblivion. The other siblings of the brood took their opportunity to collapse on Nidhogg and they ripped the Eye of Power from Nidhogg's Skull. With it removed the body of the red elder dragon fell from the sky and crashed into the forest and was left to sit there and rot into a skeleton. Nidhogg did lay dormant for a thousand years, as many generations passed his siblings never visited his corpse or did they try to bring him back, little did they know that Nidhogg was conscious and very much alive. around 1566 a man by the name of Prince Caledor Tal'therin began to have visions of a red-eye and a voice barely audible in his mind pulled him towards this legend. He took an expedition to an ancient temple where a group of Duregar known as the Norverand kept the Eye of Power sealed, he took the eye and Nidhogg spoke to the young prince, promising to repay him for returning it, but Caledor selfishly devoured the eye, taking its power into himself, he used the will of the eye to resurrect the elder dragon, Nidhogg tried to run and escape but the will of the Eye of Power exceeded Nidhogg's free will, and Nidhogg became the mount of the prince.   Two Became One: Caledor's decision to consume the Eye of Power created a huge conundrum and complication for Nidhogg. The longer the eye remained in Caledor the closer the two beings' souls became, becoming slowly stitched together into one singular soul. Nidhogg and Caledor became soulbound to one another. Each one could feel, understand, sympathize and hurt for each other. To make matters even more complicated, Caledor began to feel the insatiable hunger of the eye to consume souls, since the Eye of Power had been dormant for a thousand years it pulled on him as it did the elder dragon, but Caledor could not simply fly up and consume a primordial sun, and thus he waged a war against his own nation, and the thousands of souls took from that fight began to bolster the eye once again, Nidhogg fought by his side through all of this. Biding his time waiting for the day the prince would die so he could take back the eye and leave.       An Empire in His Image: 1579 of the Cerulian Calendar The Draconis Empire was established after the war between the old Cerulian Alliance, the former king Arthuris Tal'therin, was slain in his throne room, and Caledor's brother was also killed in a duel between him and Caledor. Caledor realized the bloodshed he had caused created a rift and divide in his soul and heart. He knew the dragon also could feel and suffer this and he chose to build his kingdom in the image of the dragon. The banners, the statues, and even the name of his kingdom were to worship the red elder dragon.     A Promise Kept: Caledor, who became known as Emperor Tarvos Highstar, created the kingdom with the purpose to fulfill a promise to the dragon. He promised the dragon that he would sit upon a throne again since the two were now one entity in both mind and spirit, Tarvos used the will of the eye of power to return it to Nidhogg, and while the power shifted from Tarvos to Nidhogg, their bond remained strong, and they serve to this day as two kings in one mind, one soul, and one accord.
