The Life Spring

The Kentier claim it was not their people who erected the standing stones surrounding the grove, though they revere the place with devotion equal to whomever must have engineered such a feat. Each stone slab stands over fifteen feet high from ground to top, a foot thick and as wide across as a grown man. And set close enough together that only animals or small children might be able to slip between. Only one true entrance exists, from which flows the head of the Life River - a swift stream that grows in size until it empties into the sea a thousand miles to the south.   Only a rare few have seen the glade's interior throughout history. Sacred ground to them, the local kentier tribes guard it fiercely against intruders and explorers, and even their own people at times. They believe that the Life Spring is the source of all life in the world. Without it's waters the continent would be barren and dry, incapable of sustaining life, and so if it were destroyed or spoiled in some way all life would soon fall along with it.   Even without the guardianship of the kentier, legends tell that ancient magics protect the place, turning away any deemed unworthy. If one dared to step inside, forging up the stream that is the only clear path, they would find another world. A piece of the Feywild seemingly stuck in the middle of our reality. And they would be lucky to return from such a journey unchanged.

Geography

Copses of trees dot the entirety of the rolling plainlands of the west, many of them home to small springs themselves, trickling streams and brooks that join the Life River further down it's path. But the Life Spring is unique.   A ring of massive standing stones surrounds the wide hill on which a dense stand of gnarled, ancient trees grows. The dense greenery stands as a stark contrast to the green-gold grass and patchwork farmlands that make up the surrounding country. The hill also stands higher than those that surround it, perhaps the tallest in the region.   Those standing stones match the geography of the area, the same type of stone that makes up the foundations of the spring itself, but it is unclear where such massive stones could have been quarried.

Fauna & Flora

There are several species of plant and animal that are unique to the glade. Flowers that bloom by night and glow like a mirror of the starry sky. Blue moss at the base of trees. Songbirds with bright feathers and strange calls, and pitch black squirrels.   More fantastic than these are the spring's true guardians. The Life Spring grove truly is touched by the fey. Creatures of pure elemental force - water and earth and air - shepherd the grove's unique wildlife and allow the spring to flow eternal. And ancient creatures, older than the oldest settlements, with fantastical appearances and magic in their veins. These rule over the grove, wise and powerful beyond human comprehension, and protect it from intruders.

Natural Resources

From deep beneath the earth bubbles up a seemingly endless supply of fresh, pure water. More than any natural spring should be able to produce. In the heart of the glade it emerges from numerous tiny springs, seeping up from between the roots of trees and joining together into a pond, and then a stream.   Many people believe that water taken directly from the spring, before it becomes diluted further south, has magical properties. It is said that Life Spring water can cure any disease and heal even the most grievous of wounds. That it can grant magical powers or visions of the future. That it is so pure that the corrupt will burn if it touches them. Similar claims have been made of the flora and fauna of the spring, given that they drink of the water to survive. None of these claims have been substantiated.
