Personal history
Born in the Chromatic Vale to a guardsman father, Xorenath was cursed by a hag whose daughter was slain by his father after she had been caught using evil magic on citizens. This curse made him so physically weak as a child that even short walks around the house left him with extreme fatigue that would take days to recover from. Xorenath, however, sought to emulate the Dragon Knights who fought in the name of the Chromatic Vale and Tiamat. So, he began to push himself physically and train his muscles. Eventually, he was able to walk. Then, he was able to run. His willpower and conviction not only led to him forming an imposing muscular physique but also to him swearing a paladin's oath and becoming a warrior who would fight for Tiamat.
He eventually left the Chromatic Vale in search of adventure so that he may return in glory and become the Chosen of Tiamat. He stopped off in a small village in the Kingdom of Drelvik where he met other adventurers. These adventurers were Simon Mockwell, Azrael, and Bob Bearbreaker. They were soon chosen by a messenger of the king to investigate the source of the tremors that had been rocking the region at the time. Xorenath descended into the Lands Below alongside the others. He and Bob Bearbreaker fought off the Great Purple Worm. Xorenath lost one of his eyes to the beast, but no losses were suffered beyond that. Xorenath also helped to escape from the drow outpost that they were brought to after being captured by drow slavers, alongside the goblin who would come to be known as Solvax and the orc who rose to prominence in the Ice-Crowned Peaks named Gharthag Bloodbeast. After escaping the drow, Xorenath, along with the others, served as a guard in a tribal settlement overlooking a ravine that was bridged by the skeleton of an ancient purple dragon. There he met Raxtas, who flew up from the ravine after searching it. Eventually, the tremors were traced to a cave beyond the ravine, and as such Xorenath investigated the cave with the rest of his party. Inside they found a massive civilization of the so-called 'lost' chromatics; dragons, dragonborn, and kobolds whose scales were brown, gray, orange, purple, and yellow. Intrigued, the group sought diplomatic relations with these creatures after fending off a swarm of kobolds. Xorenath, disgusted by the dishonor of Tiamat against the god Varahosst, took up the cause of these chromatics. To physically show his change, he partook in a ritual that turned his scales from white to gray. Afterward, the chromatics of Varahosst burst out into the overworld and began their crusade against the chromatics of Tiamat and their search for their dragon masks. Sometime after this he hunted down the hags who had cursed him and killed them, thus ending the curse upon him and giving him inhuman levels of strength.
The party found the purple dragon mask in the fortress of Gishrak-Ûz and Xorenath dueled the goblin who would become Solvax for the right to the mask. Xorenath won the battle easily and claimed the mask for himself. During the battle against the twin black dragons of the Pestilent Marshes, Xorenath revived Simon after he was killed by their acid breath weapons. Before moving to gather the other masks, Xorenath and the party helped Ghargath liberate orc slaves from Khazat-Hal. Xorenath then joined the party in a delve into a tomb in Sahrajha where they battled many yuan-ti and a blue dragon for the brown dragon mask. Xorenath also assisted in the retrieval of the yellow and gray masks. In the battle for the gray mask, Xorenath fought a red dragon in single combat and won. After assembling the masks, the party, now known as Varahosst's Host, resurrected Varahosst who bestowed the Mask of the Chromatic King upon Xorenath.
Xorenath was present when Simon and the goblin who would become Solvax were teleported into the Abyss. Here he slew the derro god Diinkarazan but refused to absorb his divine spark causing the goblin to ascend to godhood in his stead.
Xorenath's next achievement was when he sailed to the Isle of Trial upon the Crimson Crusade and completed the Gray Trial to gain possession of the gray dragonblood amulet. Shortly after this, the entirety of Varahosst's Host teleported to the Plane of Air where they were captured and tortured by Boreas, God of the North Wind. Infuriated, Varahosst made Xorenath into his Chosen which gave him the might to slay Boreas. Once again, Xorenath denied the divinity offered by this act and it was instead given to Bob Bearbreaker.
Xorenath assisted in the destruction of the four-armed golem made from black iron and obsidian that was guarding a vast horde of treasure in the Lands Below. He was also present at the battle against the great red wyrm who was named the Seneschal of the Draakhorn by Tiamat herself. In order to extract the Draakhorn, Xorenath turned himself into a purple dragon for a time to carry it to Gishrak-Ûz.
It was at this point that Xorenath began his apotheosis into the mortal incarnation of his deity. He performed a blood ritual, a half-dragon ritual, a soul-binding, a modified yuan-ti anathema creation ritual, and even let a purple dragon's ghost take partial residence in him in order to become a five-headed and five-colored dragonborn warrior. After his apotheosis, Xorenath led Varahosst's Host against the Cult of the Dragon wherein they killed its leader, Severin, to collect the Mask of the Dragon Queen. With both of the powerful chromatic masks in hand, the party went to an ancient ruined city where they used the magical technology within to combine both masks into the Chromatic Mask. Here they also learned of a ritual called the Chromatic Union, though it only listed what ingredients were required and how to perform it, not what it would do.
The last major battles that Xorenath took part in during his adventuring career were of great importance to the fate of his god and the chromatics of Varahosst. First was the battle in the Ashlands, where the main forces of Tiamat were routed and her great wyrm guardians were slain at the cost of the main leaders of the chromatics of Varahosst being killed in return. Afterwards, he partook in the battle against Tiamat in her palace's inner sanctum at the Chromatic Vale. Here he saw triumph over the tyrannical dragon queen after Simon annihilated her avatar upon the mortal realm at the cost of part of his soul.
Xorenath then retired back to the Varahossthold to serve as grandmaster of his holy order, the Vigilants of Varahosst. His next order of business was to resurrect Gorlanthor and Raxtas, both of whom had given their lives in the war against Tiamat. He also preserved the ritual ingredients gathered for the Chromatic Union, but chose not to perform the ritual as he was unaware of what exactly it was devised to accomplish.
