Magic

in Edowens Prophet

Magic in Edowens Prophet is referred to as the Khronos Theory, in that magic can exist anywhere and everywhere but that only certain people have the capability of accessing it. Magic itself is considered a mystical force that only a gifted view can access, and fewer more can tap into in its entirety. While humanity views magic as a disease, and something that must be cured; those who can use it view it as a gift and something to be cherished.

How magic was created

When the universe was created, magic didn't exist. Instead, magic was created by an ancient race as a means of combating another foe millions of years prior to the start of the story. The reason this race created magic was because the enemy they found were unaffected by physical attacks, but instead, could be affected by mystical ones. However, because the war has spread across multiple star systems and galaxies, magic became wide spread and also started to appear in primitive societies. As far as most nations are concerned, they created magic.

Elements

The Khronos Theory is guided by the six elements of Wind, Water, Earth, Lightning, Metal, and Void. As well as two sub-elements, Light and Darkness.   Each element has its advantages and disadvantages against another element. Wind, for example, erodes earth; while Earth is useful against Fire. Fire evaporates water, while Water destroys the Void, the Void destroys Lightning while Lightning melts Metal. Light and Darkness are opposing forces in and of themselves, they are neutral in that respect. More simply put:   Wind > Earth > Water > Fire > Void > Lightning > Metal > Wind   Light >< Darkness   Light and Darkness elements are always stronger than the natural elements of the universe, but are also the hardest to control and thus the easiest to mess up on.   While these elements are natural enemies, it is possible for a mage to overcome to their oppositions magic. An example being for a mage who casts a wind spell and their opposition casts an Earth spell, it is possible for the Earth spell to defeat the wind spell based upon the willpower of the mage, the area in which the combat is happening, and the talent of the one casting the wind spell.

Magical Levels

Magic is broken up into various levels, known as Magical Verses's, each Verse unlocks another level of magic that a mage can safely use. A mage can learn any type of verse, regardless of what order it falls into, but knowing a higher level verse but not knowing the one's below it can create issues.

What fuels magic

Spells are primarily fueled by Kai, Kai is a mystical energy given off by nature but can really be found on all planets and even in space. A secondary source of fuel is Aether, though this is considered a person's life force and thus is not really used. The third, and rarest form of fuel, is Leon's. Leon's is a mixture of Aether and Kai, it is considered quite powerful but no one really knows how to access it.

Who can use magic

There are three things that a person needs in order to use magic, the first is the right kind of genes. These gene's are typically mutations caused by external effects. The second is talent, what the person is capable of doing. The third, and most important, is the soul. A person's soul basically dictate's not only how powerful a mage will be but also how far they can go in life as one.

Spell Casting

Spells can be cast using three different methods, but spells also require a medium as well: A weapon, such as a staff, with a catalyst that is needed in order to focus the magical energy.

Incantations

Incantations are used solely for high level magic spells, although it is not uncommon for a mage to create an incantation for a lower level spell for one reason or another.   Combining two completely different elements into a single spell almost always requires an incantation, unless the mages in question are experienced and talented.

Activation Verse

All spells have an ancient word associated with them, this word can be used without the incantation to allow for instant activation of the spell. These Verse's are ancient words that a mage has to learn, this can be done either by being taught, learning it through a tome, or by discovering the word on their own. Using the actual Verse will always activate a spell at its fullest, though this method does allow a mage to *control* how powerful a spell is by visualizing it in their minds.   An example being the word 'Fire' which is the activation verse for that element, this is then followed by a second word which is used to determine what that spell does. An example being 'bolt', which turns the fire into a bolt that looks similar to that of an arrow.   For two experienced mages, one can speak the word 'wind' and the other 'fire', followed by the third word 'funnel' which creates a fire tornado. The third word is used to determine how the elements become intertwined. Changing funnel to 'storm' will create a raging firestorm that'll spread. Where-as just saying 'fire' and 'storm' will create a localized field of fire.

Mental Activation

The last method is known as Mental Activation, this is where the Mage is able to store the activation sequence of the spell into their mind and instantaneously call upon it at a moments notice. This is very useful for defensive spells, or for spells that have a long casting time. However, a mage can only store so many spells in their mind before they can't store anymore; the number of spells is based upon whether the chosen spell is low or high magic. A mage can store up to five low level magic, but only one high level magic spell.

Magic Types

There are eight types of magic found within the universe, some can actually be part of multiple types while others may only be part of one type.
Type Description
Necromancy Necromancy revolves around magical spells that control the dead. Revival(High) , for example, can be a form of Necromancy since it can bring back the dead.
Transmutation The art of changing one material into another, examples of this can be Recompense(Mid)
Conjuration Conjuration is the art of summoning forth familiars, this can include things like Famililars or even Daemon's
Abjuration This type of magic revolves around the creation of magical barriers, but can also, be the opposite of that; such as negating the effects of both magical or physical abilities, or even harming others. Barrier(low) is an example of a spell designed for Abjuration.
Illusion As its name would imply, this type of magic implies hallucinations; such as the creation of sounds, images, or even shadows that can fool a person into thinking that something is there when something isn't.
Enchantment Where-as Abjuration focuses on the creation of magical barriers, and the means to combat them. Enchantment focuses on the creation of beneficial physical or magical effects. Though spells of this type can also be more nefarious, such as brainwashing and charming of opponents. Dominion(High) is an example of a nefarious spell
Divination A less understood form of magic, with very few spells. Divination focuses on seeing things that others can't including the past and the future.
Evocation The most common type of magic, this focuses on raw destructive power.

Limitations

Mages are limited in the amount of spells they can cast based upon their age, willpower, talent but most importantly, the brains ability to process data. Most young mages will only be able to use a couple spells a day before they become to tired mentally, while older mages could use many before they become mentally exhausted. Mages have a set limit to the amount of Kai their body can naturally create and take in, however, there are spells that require more Kai than the body can manage and thus Mages can use a temporary Kai storage crystal which is then broken and the body absorbs the additional Kai. This Kai has to be purged within a few hours, otherwise it poisons the mage.   There are also things that magic can't break through, certain types of materials that are designed to protect against it, this in turn requires mages to use other weapons, including swords, shields, bows/arrows, or even Firearms . It is not uncommon for a mage to possess multiple weapons to account for potential situations.

What magic can and can't do

While magic is capable of many things, it is not a replacement for technology. Magic, for example, can't be used in space without the use of technology. Magic can be used to fend off magical based attacks, but it can't be used to fend off more physical attacks - such as normal guns, bows and arrows, swords, etc. In order for this to work, a combination of magic and technology is needed to give magical barriers that function.
