Shift Weapons Techonology

Shift weapons are a specialized form of magical technology used only by mages, designed specifically to augment their abilities in a way different from any other technology.
Their lack of usage by people other than mages is because they necessitate a specific component, a contract with a Domites , which serves as the soul of the weapon. This gives the weapon a limited form of sentience, and some restricted ability to function on it's own.
The technology draws it's name from it's trademark ability to shift between multiple modes of usage, allowing the mage (or the soul) to change between configurations intended for close combat, long range, or even support.
