Brumalis

"Winter's Touch is Death's Invitation" - Old Proverb

This article was created with help from akta_kairon.
In the far reaches of the Frostmark, in places that few dare to tread, let alone have the ability to, there exists a mountain. This mountain is tall and solitary, bearing the name of the region it is located in. At the base of that mountain is the Forge. A structure spoken of in legends. Ancient tales, and heroic lays speak of this Forge. It is said to be the only place, contain the only means, in which you can obtain weapons of Brumalis. Harder than steel, colder than ice, sharper than obsidian, this material is produced within the mountain, harvested and made into these ice-forged tools. If you find yourself looking upon such a device, perhaps a blade, hammer, or bow, that seems made of ice itself but which refuses to melt, then you are among the company of the gods themselves. If you are in such a position, you should check yourself, you might have bards following in your wake, already composing your tales to submit to the annals of history.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Brumalis is a hard, translucent blue material streaked with crack-like lines of white. The purest of Brumalis ore is blue all the way through, but is even more rare, and rarely occurs within Frostmark.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Brumalis has a constantly cold temperature, colder than the coldest winter. If one were to touch the blade for any length of time, it would be easy to gain frostbite, or at least severe damage. As such, when it is used as a weapon, it can be a deadly match.   It is also much like a metal, for the right smith. In the Forge at the base of the mountain, with special equipment said to have been bestowed by a certain god, it can be melted, refined and shaped into the elegant sweep of a blade, or the crushing face of a maul. For those that have handled it, the material is said to be harder than diamonds when properly smelted.

Origin & Source

This material appears to grow naturally within the mountain, forming large, tower-like crystals in the caves there. The Forge was situated to take direct advantage of the caves which seem to produce the most, but there are deeper, lesser known caves that contain purer crystals of the material. It is mined with Brumalis tools, which begs the question, how were those tools gained in the first place?

History & Usage

Byproducts & Sideproducts

When the Brumalis is smelted, there are several impurities that can be collected by an experienced smith. This slurry, a mixture of Brumalis and some other materials that are grown into it, is often saved as a draught that can be used to stave off the cold. Those who live in or near Frostmark use it as an emergency measure in times of stranding or direct contact with Brumalis pockets.
