The Løserne (Looser-ne)

"Alright, I know it'll sound a bit crazy, but here's what happened:   I heard that the lines got tangled over in the forest, and it was getting dangerous, but I wanted to see what it was like anyways. We're pretty far out in the sticks, and I'm a part of the local druid circle, so I figured I must be able to do something since the bigger names would take a while. But when I get out there, to my surprise there was already a group of four people, all of them with the same blue shoulder-capes on. One was pretty small, two were about average, and the last one was pretty big.   Well, anyways, they were all doing some kind of circle ritual, and I could see the leyline energy being pulled up and straightened out, like literally, physically being untied, like it was just some weird yarn. I couldn't get any closer, I was just in awe watching them do it, it reminded me of all those old legends about the fates and stuff.   After they untied it all though, that's when it got really weird, because all of a sudden this little spark came out, and I think it turned into a fire elemental? It looked like what's in the books anyways. Then, the tall one threw off her cloak, walked up right next to it, the other three made some kind of barrier, and I shit you not, she started wrestling the thing!   ...   No, i'm not making this up, Ryan, I swear I saw it! She was real good at it too, I didn't even know you could wrestle fire, but she must've had some magic on. Anyways, she goes three rounds against this elemental, and then it poofs, and I can see the energy going back into the earth, and that was that! The four of them talked, laughed about it like it was just another day at the job, and just left!   If I ever find out who those folk were, I have half a mind to ask if they're hiring! Sounds better than helping old Matilda fertilize her cabbages!"
--A story overheard at The Frozen Note Tavern in Prol
The leylines of Edda are sprawling, intangible, yet ever influential to the land around it, and equally influenced by it. So, just as nature can be chaotic and unpredictable, so too can the Leylines be in their unseen flow through the earth.   Most of the time, issues caused by the chaos of Leylines can be solved by the Weave Menders, who send out their own energy to the leylines and control it like an autonomous limb to root out any issues from within. But there are cases where the flow of the leylines gets tangled within themselves, which can be challenging for a Weave Mender to operate within. It also leaves the potential for any added energy to make more of a problem.
This is where the Løserne comes into the picture. A branch of the Weave Menders as a whole, starting a sect of the original Coven, The Løserne, also known as the Looseners, draw out the leylines in a mutable form of energy, rather than sending their energy in. Drawing out the tangled portion of the leyline, they diagnose the issue and use the appropriate rituals and methods to literally detangle the knot in the leyline.   However, in the process of detangling, the energy that's been gathering inside usually has to go somewhere, and putting the chaotic energy back into the leylines directly is just asking for more tangles in the future. So, the same ritual that detangles the knot gives the energy a form, usually something like an Elemental. This is where the aspect of being a Løserne that is most famous (or infamous) comes into play: To heal the leylines, you have to defeat the elemental that's spawned from them.   This leads to at least one person on any Løserne squad being very apt at combat, either physical or magical, but most typically physical to bypass any magical defenses on the summoned creature.   However brutal the ensuing fight gets, once the creature is defeated, the energy safely and separately returns to the Leylines and flows normally once more, and the Løserne goes on their way either back to base, or on the next job. It's a potentially dangerous and very specialized position, but an immensely important and rewarding one all the same.

Structure

The Løserne don't have a hierarchical structure in their organization, although they do report and receive orders from the main Weave Mender organization. There are different ranks within the Løserne, but those are more descriptors than a rank of authority:
  • A Jakt looks for anomalies and hunts down where the specific problem lies.
  • A Helbrede diagnoses the problem once it's found and chooses the specific ritual to perform.
  • A Dra is one who actively has the skill to pull forth the energy of the leylines for the detangling to begin
  • A Slag is the ones who are skilled in combat to take down creatures spawned from the entanglement.
A standard group sent out on a mission will have at least one of each type, but some members of the Løserne have skills in more than one area, or in some cases, the problem might need more than one of a certain type.

Public Agenda

The Løserne's duty is the same as the Weave Menders: magical medics of the land and the leylines specifically who do their work with the delicacy, care, and precision that it requires. While people might look at the martial side of Løserne work as less of a delicate craft, it too is a necessary and important part of the process, and one led up to by numerous stages of careful planning and investigating.

Assets

Much like other magical services, the Weave Menders and their subsidiaries are government-funded organizations, providing them with ample funding and resources to do their work. The Løserne specifically invest in arcane weaponry for the Slag, special tools and devices for the Jakt and Dra, and various tomes of knowledge and expertise from druids, wizards, and witches past for the Helbrede.

History

Technically, the skills and operations now given to the Løserne have always been a part of Weave Mending arts, although when the group began to spread out from their central area in Theogony, they decided that they needed to create new wells of resources and capable individuals, instead of becoming overstretched. Therefore, in 920 EE, the Weave Mender Ingeborg Bakke started the Løserne as their own unit and was the first Slag of the group.
