Introduction:

Souls are 5-dimensional objects that are connected to every conscious creature in the universe with cosmic fibers. Souls themselves are what gives intelligent creatures sapience, and true sapience is impossible if a soul is not allowed to form. Souls are divided into two types: true souls (commonly called just "souls") and demi-souls.

Description:

Like gravitons are the carriers of the gravitational demi-force, souls are the carriers of the force of life. The God Life's power is directly tied to the number of souls in the universe, and their death would lead to the eradication of all life in the universe.
As 5-dimensional objects, souls are normally impossible to percieve. They can be detected with 5D Planar Cameras and some forms of magic, though physically interacting with them is normally impossible. The 5-dimension geometry of a souls is impossible for the 3-dimensional inhabitants of the universe to percieve, so civilization's understanding of their form is flawed. What is known about their appearance is:
-They glow a bright color, normally white or cyan
-They are normally 1/8 to 1/3 of the size of their host

Formation:

Souls form through the process of spontanious consciousness, one of the 3 Main Questions of Science. When a system or concept becomes complex enough, it forms a soul and becomes sapient. While this has occured in the case of unintentionally sentient AI, Solar Dragons, and the Old Gods, spontanious consciousness is mostly observed in living creatures. Once a living creature's brain becomes complex enough through neural connections it triggers for a soul to form. In less complex creatures like most arthropods a demi-soul is created. In more complex creatures like humanoids a true soul is created.
