The Penitent
In between the levels of Hell and the material world, exists the Void. This is a region of unrelenting suffering, regret, and purgatorial decay. Souls trapped in the Void are neither free, nor imprisoned, but nonetheless suffer an eternity of sorrow. The penitent appear as ghostly figures of pure whispy shadow. With no face, no voice, and no awareness beyond their own misdeeds and regret. They march along the plains of Viena in an endless procession towards nothing. The penitent represent those of questionable moral fiber who have passed from the world of the living but have not been accepted by the Hells as eternal slaves. What repentance they may have given died along with their withered souls. All that is left is an eternity of regret and longing.
