Detlev d'Cannith
Detlev d’Cannith is a disgraced Magewright of the Fabricators guild and possesses a Least Dragonmark. His limited spellcasting has always been a sore point, so he instead took great pride in his magical craft. Personality wise, he’s eclectic and helpful, although abrasive and stubborn. He doesn’t like his work and expertise being questioned. A thin man in his early 30’s, he has a shock of dirty red hair contrasting with his pale skin.
He became disillusioned with House Cannith during the war after his Dragonshard Cannonry was repeatedly undercut and sidelined by his superiors. Greater Magewrights viewed his experimental artillery concepts as expensive and unstable, favoring the tried and true Warforged for development. Relying on intelligent weapons would, in Detlev’s view, come to bite the House in the end.
After years of fighting for his project, Detlev grew tired of Guild politics and left in disgrace (but not defeated) for Q'barra in 985 YK. He chose Q’barra as his place of exile firstly so he could use its abundant Dragonshards to continue his research, and also for its Cyre influences that reminded him of home. Moving was something he first did out of pragmatism, but upon arrival he found that working in the frontier communities surprisingly rewarding. Years of dealing his limited supplies made him uniquely capable of the challenging repair work in isolated, rural communities. Here was a hardworking people that finally appreciated his eccentric engineering style! Over time, he grew comfortable and his fervent weapon development slowed as he slid into his new role as the towns resident tinkerer.
To Detlev, hearing of the Day of Mourning and subsequent Treaty of Thronehold was emotionally conflicting. The death of his homeland and everyone of his old life shook him deeply, leaving him with guilt for slowing his weapon research while his nation was in peril. If he had focused on what he came to do, to finish his Dragonshard Cannon, then maybe the war would’ve ended differently. While it was too late for Cyre, House Cannith’s fall from power and the loss of the Warforged gave him confidence in his earlier views. Instead of falling into despair, Detlev would instead revive his research to prepare for the next war.
