Undying Court

On the island continent of Aerenal, the living converse freely with the dead on a daily basis. The Aereni Elves offer prayers not to distant gods, but to their ancestors, the spirits of whom are believed to be the guardians of their extended families. In addition, some prayers are offered to those who are dead but have not departed. Called the Deathless, these undead elves are an active and integral part of Aereni society. Taken together, the spirits and animated dead comprise the semi-divine host known as The Undying Court, the individual members of which serve as counselors, protectors, warriors, and holy figures for the living.   Although the Aereni faith is difficult to codify, their primary doctrine can be summarized thusly:
Existence is a spiritual journey far longer than a single lifetime. Only the Undying can ever truly learn what great wonders lie at its end.
This is the core belief of the Aereni and is why they welcome death as a new, even necessary, stage of their spiritual journeys.   The greatest expression of one's faith in Aerenal is devotion to one's family. The Undying Court, after all, is composed of one's ancestors, and, upon death, you will likewise be charged with watching over and protecting your kin. In fact, many Aereni directly serve one or more of their Deathless ancestors on a daily basis.    Seeking perfection in all things is another important expression of Aereni faith. This pursuit colors everything they do: artisans spend weeks on a single item, lawmakers study and debate policy from every possible angle, and mages can devote years to completing the perfect incantation of a spell. This endeavor for excellence is deeply rooted in Aereni history and cultural identity. To seek greatness is to seek spiritual advancement, and achieving greatness is the first requirement for one who hopes to one day join the Undying Court.   Some Aereni choose to don death masks as a way to display their reverence for death. Others permanently etch it into their skin with elaborate tattoos of bones and skulls. Some even strive to emulate the mannerisms of the dead and will mutilate their flesh with alchemy to appear mummified or zombified. Fortunately, this last is extremely rare and can be attributed almost exclusively to heretical fanatics.
