Aereni Elves

The following is an excerpt from Onward to the Past: My Adventures in Eberron by celebrated explorer and extrovert Martus Makfleye d'Phiarlan
The Aereni elves, who rival their cousins the Valenar for the title "Least Fun Pointy-Ear to Invite to a Party," take their name from Aeren, the mythical hero who freed the elven race from slavery by toppling the empire of giants who ruled ancient Xen'drik. It's a story they tell at any opportunity, so be sure to ask if you meet an Aerani and are in need of a nap. The Aereni are isolationist in nature, which is probably just as well for the rest of us. Few non-elves visit Aerenal and even fewer of those of us who do visit are in a terrible rush to go back. The small island continent is purportedly the site of a manifest zone of Irian, which is what allows the rituals and ceremonies necessary to turn a boring, perfection-obsessed elf into a boring, perfection-obsessed elf who won't take a hint and die. Ever.   In what might appear the very height of hypocrisy considering that they literally live among and worship their own Deathless ancestors, the Aereni despise the creation of undead. However, as the Aereni are quick to explain, the Deathless, unlike "true" undead, draw power from positive rather than negative energy and thus the two are completely different. My apologies if you could actually hear the sound of my eyes rolling as I wrote that. Many Aereni choose to paint or tattoo their faces to look like skulls or adorn themselves with other death-related symbology. As you can imagine, consequently Eberron is not exactly overflowing with half-elves who boast of Aereni parentage...
