The Midwives
The Midwives are the largest, most powerful thieves guild in Korth. They started out as a band of halfling forgers, and the name referenced the way the midwife would "bring new people" into the world. Over several decades, the power of the group has grown, as has their interests.
The midwives tend to avoid crime that preys primarily on the poor and weak -- so no drug peddling or prostitution. Stealing from the rich, smuggling, extortion, gambling, and so on are all daily business. The midwife herself has a circuit of local taverns she makes each week, spending time meeting with customers and Nurses to discuss the business of all kinds. She is never seen coming or going, so most folk assume that there are secret passages that connect these taverns.
The current midwife is the daughter of the original midwife, who is still alive but retired. She goes by Caramella Hedgehopper, but like most of the midwives, she has many identities, and no one is sure what her true one is.
The head of the Midwives is always called Midwife. Lieutenants are called Nurses, and anyone who is a "made" person within the organization is called a Wet nurse. The rest of the gang are just referred to as attendants.
