Midwife

The midwife is the traditional name of the leader of the most powerful thieves guild in Korth. The original midwife started out as an exceptionally gifted forger, but her wealth and power grew. Other guilds tried to co-opt her work, and in the end she had to pull together her own guild to remain independent.
Now, many years later, she lives a life of almost complete retirement, and her daughter has taken up the title of Midwife. Forgery is still a major part of the Midwife's work, but the guild also operates gambling dens, burglary rings, fences, and so on. Called The Midwives the guild leaves other sorts of crime that prey upon the poor, like prostitution and drug peddling, to other guilds. The Midwives, more recently, have taken up extortion of a sort, offering a "subscription" service that merchants can pay to provide the midwife's protection against thievery.
