War Chitin
War chitin is a heavy armor crafted from the massive carapace plates of Large monstrous scorpions, harvested through dangerous hunts and then reinforced with alchemical hardening. Unlike the lighter chitin armor commonly worn by drow hunters and scouts, war chitin is bulky, imposing, and unmistakably martial. It is reserved for moments when a leader wishes to be seen—either in ritual, or in war, where subtlety is no longer the point.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
War chitin functions as heavy armor, offering protection comparable to reinforced plate while being slightly lighter than metal of similar strength. However, its joint plates are rigid, so agility suffers. It grants excellent resistance to physical harm but can be cumbersome in cramped tunnels, where its size becomes a liability. With proper alchemical curing, the chitin resists humidity and time, though neglected plates become brittle.
Manufacturing process
The carapace plates are removed and boiled in resin baths to purge organic residue. While warm, each plate is shaped to the wearer, ensuring fit and balance. The plates are then layered over a woven undercoat, bound together by sinew ties and pinned with bone rivets. Once assembled, the armor is sealed in a cooling smoke-lodge, which hardens the plates and sets their finish.
History
War chitin emerged among drow communities who held that leadership must be proven, not declared. To lead warriors in battle, one first had to take life from a creature that could just as easily take one’s own. The armor became a symbolic assertion: “My life was wagered, and I remain.” In many clans, suits of war chitin are heirlooms, repaired and re-alchemized generation after generation.
Significance
War chitin serves two primary roles within drow society. In battle, it is meant to be seen, projecting authority, resolve, and the inevitability of the wearer’s command. In ceremony, it functions as a reminder of cost—of the dangerous hunts undertaken to acquire the plates, of kin defended, and of burdens accepted in leadership. Because of its weight, rarity, and symbolic gravity, the armor is not worn casually. To encounter a drow leader wearing war chitin generally means that a matter of great consequence is already underway.

War chitin is exceptionally rare, not because it is difficult to craft, but because it is costly in blood. The scorpions that yield plates of the necessary size are territorial apex predators, and hunting them is an undertaking only elite warriors or well-coordinated warbands attempt. Only drow leaders, champions, or honored veterans are permitted to wear such armor openly.
War chitin is constructed from the primary carapace plates of Large monstrous scorpions, selected for thickness and curvature. These plates are bound together with ligature materials such as sinew, gut cord, or layered leather underweave to provide internal flexibility. The outer surfaces are sealed with resin derived from jungle sap to increase impact resistance and prevent splintering. The plates are typically joined using bone or obsidian rivets, shaped in such a way as to avoid cracking the shell. The final coloration depends on the scorpion species harvested, ranging from matte obsidian-black and deep rust-red to glossy greens or iridescent, oil-slick hues.
Crafting war chitin requires specialized equipment suited to the shaping of hardened shell. Curved chitin-carving blades are used to trim and contour the plates, as straight-edged metal tools can cause cracking. The plates are softened in heat-tents prior to shaping, then set in resin baths that preserve flexibility and reinforce durability. Workshops capable of producing war chitin are typically located deep within clan territories, often guarded, as both the materials and the techniques involved are considered culturally significant and strategically valuable.
