Mournlode

Purple Mournlode is a rare, iron-like metal found only within the Mournland, chiefly in the Field of Ruins. In its raw state, the ore appears as mottled purple stone shot through with dull gray, a coloration that many describe as unnatural, as though the iron itself were bruised. When refined, mournlode becomes a silvery metal streaked with luminous violet veins, varying in intensity depending on purity and processing. Though mournlode is physically indistinguishable from iron in weight and structural resilience, it possesses a pronounced affinity against the undead, making it highly sought after by templars, inquisitors, and scholars of necromantic countermeasures.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Refined mournlode gleams with a soft metallic silver threaded through with subtle purple iridescence. The coloration does not polish away, nor does it tarnish; the violet streaking seems to shift faintly under changing light. The metal has hardness 10 and 30 hit points per inch of thickness, identical to iron. It works cleanly under the hammer and accepts engraving well, though many artisans leave it unembellished to let the natural veining remain visible.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Mournlode manifests different defensive and offensive qualities depending on how it is shaped:

  • Weapons crafted of mournlode count as cold iron or alchemical silver, whichever is more effective, for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction of undead.
  • Armor forged from mournlode grants its wearer a +1 resistance bonus on saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural effects used by undead.
  • A mournlode holy symbol enhances the wielder’s channeled power, causing +1 additional damage per die to undead.

These effects require no activation, attunement, or specific piety; they are intrinsic to the metal.

Geology & Geography

All confirmed deposits of mournlode are located in ruined Karrnathi and Cyrean battleground strata, now buried within the Mournland’s magically-altered environment. No reliable sources exist elsewhere. Whether mournlode formed after the Day of Mourning or was altered by it remains debated. Some theorists suggest the metal’s reactive qualities are a response to necromantic saturation, while others view it as a residue of interrupted binding rites at the moment of catastrophe.

Origin & Source

Before the Mourning, no records describe purple-veined iron of this type. The earliest recovered specimens appear only after the cataclysm, implying that mournlode is a post-Mourning phenomenon. Whether it is a cause, consequence, or echo of the event remains unknown. The Church of the Silver Flame, Dragon Below cults, certain Sovereign priests, and arcane scholars all dispute its meaning.

History & Usage

History

Interest in mournlode rose quickly when it became clear the metal consistently breached undead resistances. Karrnathi field officers, Silver Flame exorcists, and agents of Jorasco and Cannith have all attempted organized extraction. Most expeditions have been lost, undone not by hostile forces alone but by the dead-grey mist and the psychological distortions of the Mournland.

Everyday use

Mournlode may be smelted and forged using standard ironworking techniques, though many smiths report a faint chill or low hum during refinement. Weapons or armor made from mournlode cost +700 gp, while a mournlode holy symbol costs 400 gp.

Items without metal components cannot incorporate mournlode.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Mournlode sits at the uneasy crossroads of hope and dread. Some clergy describe it as a blessing—the Flame’s mercy made metal. Others believe it is a wound, a lingering trauma of the Mourning given form. Among the people of Thrane, wearing mournlode can be seen as a solemn burden. Among Cyre’s survivors, it can be seen as a mourning rite, a way to bear memory into battle.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

Mining mournlode disturbs unstable magical residue and often awakens undead phenomena. The metal itself is stable, but the places it comes from are not. Smelting produces slag with traces of violet mineral residue, occasionally used in funerary ink or warding chalks.

Hazards

The principal danger of mournlode is where it must be obtained, not the metal itself. Prolonged presence in the Mournland is a threat to mental, physical, and spiritual health. Miners often require clerical or magical supervision to prevent memory dissociation, empathic bleed, or undead proximity reactions.

Reusability & Recycling

Mournlode can be reforged without losing its qualities. In fact, many recovered relics originate from previously destroyed implements, reforged for new bearers as acts of remembrance.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Legal commerce in mournlode is extremely limited. Most pieces in circulation originate from recovered battlefield relics, unauthorized expeditions into the Mournland, or the armories of religious militant orders that actively seek the metal for use against the undead. House Cannith is widely believed to maintain discreet acquisition channels, though they rarely acknowledge doing so. Karrnathi authorities publicly deny involvement in mournlode trade, despite rumors that certain military laboratories have quietly acquired samples for study.

Storage

Mournlode is stable and does not corrode, allowing it to be stored and maintained like ordinary iron. Weapons and armor may be displayed openly, but holy symbols and ritual implements are often kept wrapped or veiled when not in use, both out of reverence and to prevent unnecessary contact with funerary or consecrated energies.

Law & Regulation

Because no nation holds formal authority over the Mournland, there is no universally recognized legal claim to newly discovered deposits or recovered items. Nevertheless, several factions—including religious orders, arcane colleges, and Cyran diaspora groups—assert moral entitlement to mournlode based on purpose, heritage, or sacrifice. Such claims frequently lead to disputes, and in some cases, these conflicts escalate into open confrontation.
