Leafweave

Leafweave armor is crafted from the leaves of the bronzewood tree, carefully layered and interwoven into a flexible, cloth-like lattice. Once formed, the suit is treated through a precise alchemical infusion that strengthens the material without sacrificing lightness or movement. The result is armor that offers protection comparable to leather, while weighing noticeably less. On Aerenal, leafweave is seen as the natural intersection of craft, patience, and reverence for living material.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Leafweave functions similarly to light leather armor, granting equivalent protection while imposing reduced weight and encumbrance. The armor remains breathable and flexible, making it particularly effective in warm climates or situations where stealth and endurance are required. However, damaged leafweave requires specialized repair, as ordinary leatherworking cannot restore the alchemical structure.

Manufacturing process

The leaves are cleaned, dried, and sorted by thickness, then hand-woven into the rough shape of the armor. Once the weave is complete, the suit is submerged in an alchemical bath and allowed to soak over several days. When removed, it is shaped to form and left to cure. The entire crafting process requires both a successful Craft (armorsmithing) check for construction and a DC 25 Craft (alchemy) check to properly execute the infusion that gives leafweave its signature durability.

History

The practice of weaving bronzewood leaves began as an art of memorial preservation, where offerings of leaves were collected from trees grown near ancestral shrines. Over centuries, Aereni artisans refined the fiber-binding and infusion processes until the material became both symbolic and practical. Many regard leafweave as emblematic of Aerenal’s philosophy: strength through endurance, not force.

Significance

To Aereni society, leafweave is a statement of discipline, not wealth. Those who wear it are expected to embody restraint, focus, and measured action. Outside Aerenal, leafweave sometimes carries an aura of mystique, being associated with undying guardians, silent wardens, and those who move through environments without disturbing them.

Rarity

Leafweave is found almost exclusively among the Aereni, particularly within houses, temples, and ancestral lineages where bronzewood cultivation and alchemical dye-baths are maintained. While not strictly “secret,” the craft is seldom shared with outsiders, and finished suits are rarely sold abroad. Most leafweave seen beyond Aerenal is either gifted for diplomatic reasons or carried by travelers with strong familial ties.

Raw materials & Components

The armor relies on fresh bronzewood leaves, collected at a specific maturity and cured before weaving. The leaves are bound with a combination of plant resins, softened bark fibers, and alchemical stabilizers, which fuse the layers into a unified structure without stiffening them. The final infusion uses reagents derived from amber sap and smoked myrrh to preserve flexibility.

Tools

Crafting requires both armorworking equipment and alchemical apparatus. The weaving process is done on a leafloom, a frame designed to stretch and tension the material. The infusion itself requires non-metal vessels, as reactive metals disrupt the bonding process. Artisans often work in shaded open-air spaces to avoid direct sunlight altering the infusion rate.
