Dreamhide Armor
Dreamhide is a supple, dark green armor crafted from the hides of dream serpents, a rare species native to the jungles and river canyons of Xen’drik. The skin retains a faint iridescence when treated properly, and polished dreamhide displays a shifting pattern reminiscent of scales glimpsed beneath water. The armor is flexible, durable, and extremely quiet when worn, making it favored by hunters who rely on patience and silence.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Dreamhide armor functions similarly to leather armor, offering protection while maintaining mobility. It is particularly valued for being silent in movement and resistant to rot in humid jungle environments. When properly maintained, dreamhide remains flexible for years; if neglected, it stiffens gradually and loses both comfort and symbolic value.
Manufacturing process
The hide is stretched and scraped until supple, then immersed in a cold infusion of resin and oil for several days. It is removed, dried slowly under layered cloth screens, and shaped while still partially flexible. Once the armor has set, it is polished repeatedly to restore the serpentine sheen. Each suit takes weeks to prepare and is often accompanied by a small ritual of presentation.
History
The craft of working dream serpent hide originates with jungle hunter-clans and certain drow communities who view the serpents as symbols of insight, awareness, and the boundary between waking and dreaming. Traditionally, hides were taken only from serpents that died in natural combat or were slain during ritual hunts. Over generations, this practice became a marker of prestige: to wear dreamhide was to be recognized as someone who had faced what others could not.
Significance
Wearing dreamhide is considered a quiet declaration of capability. Hunters who wear it are expected to act with composure and respect for the environment. Among locals, dreamhide is sometimes believed to retain a trace of the serpent’s attunement, granting the wearer heightened intuition or clarity in moments of tension. Whether or not this is true, the belief is widespread enough to influence how such armor is treated socially.

Dreamhide armor is not traded openly. Among the Vulkooridal Drow, who harvest and prepare it, the hide is reserved for proven hunters, warriors of renown, or those who have completed significant rites of endurance or tracking. Outsiders who possess dreamhide are generally assumed to have either earned deep trust, or taken it in a way that would be considered a serious offense.
The hide is taken from dream serpents that inhabit shaded wetlands and canopy riverways. Once harvested, the skin is cleaned and scraped, then treated with oil from night blooming vines, crushed bark resins, and mineral salts that preserve the subtle coloration. The green hue deepens with age and exposure to humid air.
Crafting dreamhide requires bone scrapers, porous drying frames, and cool, shaded workspaces. The hide must never be sun-dried, as sunlight destroys the serpentine luster and flexibility. The binding straps and underlayers are typically made of plant fiber cord or thin leather strips.
