Densewood
Densewood is one of the most significant natural resources of Aerenal’s deep forests, valued for its remarkable strength and durability. In appearance, it resembles dark hardwood with a tight grain, but when handled it reveals a surprising weight and rigidity, closer in feel to wrought iron than timber. Densewood is used primarily for the construction of staves, hafted weapons, bows, furniture, architectural supports, and ceremonial objects, particularly in places where longevity and resilience matter more than portability.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Densewood is deep brown to nearly black when freshly cut, lightening only slightly as it ages. The grain is tight and close-patterned, giving the surface a stone-smooth finish when polished. It has a hardness of 8, comparable to carved stone, and approximately 20 hit points per inch of thickness. When struck, densewood emits a low, heavy resonance rather than a sharp crack, reinforcing its sense of solidity.
Physical & Chemical Properties
This wood is exceptionally strong and resistant to breaking. Any attempt to snap or splinter densewood requires considerably more force than ordinary lumber, reflected in the +5 increase to the Strength DC required to break it. Densewood is also highly resistant to rot, insects, and long-term weathering — one reason why Aereni structures built with densewood often stand unchanged for centuries. However, densewood is heavy, weighing twice as much as ordinary wood, which limits its use in equipment where speed and lightness are priorities.
Geology & Geography
Densewood trees grow primarily in old-growth groves of Aerenal, many of which are protected by local priests of the Undying Court or by long-standing guardian traditions. These trees are slow to mature and can take decades, if not centuries, to reach harvestable size. Attempts to cultivate densewood outside Aerenal have met with limited success; the trees seem to require the climate, soil memory, and spiritual stillness of the island to achieve full density.
History & Usage
History
Densewood has been used in Aerenal since the early days of the elven settlement, particularly in the construction of shrines, remembrance halls, and reliquary frameworks. While bronzewood reflects the living continuity of the forest, densewood carries the weight of unbroken endurance, and is often associated with solemnity, memory, and structures intended to last beyond any single lifetime.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Among the Aereni, densewood represents permanence. It is common in the architecture of ancestor vaults, deathless sanctuaries, and family halls where generations return. In weaponcraft, densewood is used for staves, greatclubs, bows, and spearshafts, especially those belonging to guardians and ritual wardens. To gift densewood is to acknowledge that the recipient is expected to remain, to hold their position, to endure.
Refinement
Densewood must be carefully seasoned before work begins; unseasoned densewood will crack under blade or chisel. Skilled woodworkers use reinforced clamps and slow-cutting tools, often treated with sap-oil lubricants, to prevent splintering. Craft DCs are unchanged from standard woodworking, but the weight and hardness increase strain and time, making densewood work the domain of experienced artisans.
Manufacturing & Products
Densewood can replace wood in any item that already uses wood. It cannot substitute for metal in blades, armor plates, or chain construction, but it excels in:
- Staves and quarterstaves
- Bows and crossbows
- Polearms and hafts
- Shields
- Architectural beams
- Furniture and ceremonial fixtures
Such items are twice the weight and twice the cost of their ordinary wooden equivalents, excluding masterwork or magical enhancements.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
Because densewood grows slowly and in culturally significant groves, harvesting is carefully regulated. Excessive cutting is considered a grave cultural offense, and trade in unlicensed logs or raw beams is strictly monitored. Offcuts and shavings are often used in incense, oil infusion, or wood-ash ink, each believed to retain some measure of the wood’s endurance.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Densewood is rare outside Aerenal but can be legally purchased in small quantities through authorized Aereni merchants and diplomatic trade channels. Illicit trade exists, primarily among collectors of exotic arms, but is viewed unfavorably by both Aerenal and the Undying Court.
Storage
Densewood requires no special storage conditions. Its weight and durability make it stable across climates, and finished pieces resist decay even in humid or temperate environments.
Law & Regulation
Export of raw densewood is controlled by Aerenal. Finished items are permitted to circulate more freely, but misuse of densewood from sacred groves is considered a cultural violation, and in some regions, a criminal one.
