Chitin Armor
Chitin armor is made from the carapaces of monstrous scorpions, harvested and shaped into curved plates that are then alchemically treated to prevent brittleness. The resulting armor is lightweight, flexible enough for movement, and offers protection comparable to studded leather, though it lacks the refined joint reinforcement found in manufactured armors. It is most commonly associated with the drow of Xen’drik, who have refined both the hunting of these creatures and the shaping of their shells into durable equipment.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Chitin armor functions similarly to studded leather armor in terms of protection and mobility, though its plate sections leave the joints somewhat less protected. The armor is light, quiet, and resistant to rot, making it especially suited for humid jungle environments. However, if not properly cured, the carapace can become brittle over time, cracking or splintering from repeated blows.
Manufacturing process
The harvested carapace is first separated into workable plates, then soaked in an alchemical resin to preserve flexibility. Each section is shaped while warm, then set to dry under controlled shade to prevent cracking. The plates are lashed together over a fitted backing of leather or woven material. Once complete, the armor is often sealed with oil to maintain durability in humid environments.
History
The practice of crafting armor from chitin began as a necessity. In Xen’drik’s deep jungles and caverns, metalworking was limited, and hunters required protection that did not burden them with excessive weight. Over time, certain clans developed ritualized hunting practices for acquiring suitable carapaces, and the armor became associated with lineage skill, patience, and the ability to outlast the jungle’s predators.
Significance
For many drow, chitin armor is not merely equipment but identity. Wearing it reflects skill in the hunt or the favor of those who provide the materials. Some tribes paint the plates with pigments made from minerals or insect dyes, while others keep the natural sheen to signify readiness and utility before ornament.

The main material is the outer carapace plates taken from large scorpions or similar arthropods. These are cleaned, scraped, and treated with resin binders and flexibility agents derived from jungle plant saps. Strapping is often made from leather, woven fungal fibers, or treated sinew.
Crafting chitin armor requires carving tools with fine, curved blades, bone scrapers, drying racks, and mixing vessels for alchemical treatments. Metal tools are used sparingly, as they tend to chip the shell during shaping.
