Byeshk
Byeshk is a rare, lustrous purple metal found primarily in the Byeshk and Graywall Mountains along the frontier of Droaam. It is dense, exceptionally hard, and carries an iridescent sheen that can appear violet, wine-dark, or nearly black depending on how it is polished. Byeshk is traditionally forged into weapons and jewelry, as its weight and rigidity make it difficult to shape into effective armor. Smiths prize it not merely for its beauty and physical durability, but for its unique metaphysical resonance: byeshk weapons are among the few physical tools capable of bypassing the damage reduction of daelkyr, the ancient aberrant lords of Khyber.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Byeshk is immediately recognizable by its purple metallic sheen, which deepens as the metal is repeatedly heated and quenched. The grain of the metal is fine and uniform, allowing a polished surface to reflect light cleanly, almost like colored glass. Byeshk is 50% heavier than steel, lending byeshk-forged items a pronounced weight. When struck, it produces a deep, ringing tone rather than a sharp metallic clang.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Byeshk is extremely hard, with a hardness of 17 and approximately 35 hit points per inch of thickness. Its density and rigidity make it a poor candidate for flexible or jointed armor; even when shaped into plates, the metal remains unwilling to bend under stress. For this reason, byeshk armor sees little use outside ceremonial display or symbolic reinforcement. Byeshk weapons, on the other hand, are highly valued: a bludgeoning weapon with a byeshk striking head delivers an additional +1 damage through sheer mass and impact. This bonus does not stack with magical enhancement.
Geology & Geography
Byeshk is mined from deep-vein deposits found in the western reaches of Khorvaire, mainly in territories controlled or influenced by the monstrous nation of Droaam. The richest deposits occur in mountains scarred by planar thin-points and aberrant incursions — regions where the boundaries between Eberron and Khyber have historically been contested. Many local miners and shamans believe the metal is “touched by the Below,” and that its strength reflects ancient wars against the daelkyr.
History & Usage
History
Byeshk has long been associated with the defense against aberrations, particularly during the Xoriat Incursion thousands of years ago. Then, as now, byeshk weapons played a pivotal role in combating creatures whose flesh resisted all other forged metals. In later centuries, byeshk found use among the warlords of western Khorvaire as a symbol of strength and dominion, and bracelets, torcs, and signet rings of byeshk remain status markers among Droaam’s chieftains.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Among the peoples of Droaam, byeshk occupies a position similar to ancestral bronze among dwarves or bronzewood among Aereni. It is a material of sovereignty, often shaped into heirloom weapons or oath-marked jewelry. Some ogres and gnolls believe that byeshk retains the memory of battles fought against the daelkyr, and that to carry it is to carry part of that ancient defiance.
Refinement
Working byeshk is notoriously difficult. The metal requires intense sustained heat to become workable, and even then, its density fights the hammer. Crafting byeshk items increases Craft DCs significantly: +8 for armorsmithing, +5 for weapon or general metalwork. Specialized forges in western Khorvaire and Droaam use deep-furnace bellows or magically-assisted kilns to maintain the necessary temperatures. Refinement is slow and energy-intensive, contributing to the metal’s high cost and rarity.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
Most byeshk items are either:
- Weapons (especially hammers, maces, morningstars, axes, and other designs that emphasize weight), or
- Jewelry and ceremonial ornamentation, valued for its striking coloration and prestige.
Weapons made from byeshk are often passed down through generations, as the metal is highly resistant to corrosion and takes a renewed edge well when reforged.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Because byeshk is heavily associated with Droaam, much of the legal and illegal trade flows through monstrous intermediaries, smugglers, or those who operate outside House Kundarak registry. House Tharashk, given its presence in the western frontier, frequently controls access to mining sites and purchase rights. Outside Droaam, byeshk is expensive, infrequent, and often politically complicated to obtain.
