Bronzewood
Bronzewood is a dense, exceptionally durable hardwood native to the ancient forests of Aerenal. It is notable for its ability to be shaped and worked in ways that allow it to function as a true substitute for metal in both armor and weaponcraft. When properly treated, bronzewood holds a sharpened edge, accepts engraving, and retains its strength under stress, making it highly valued among Aereni artisans and foreign armorers alike.
Properties
Material Characteristics
In its raw state, bronzewood appears as a deep brown or reddish timber with a faint metallic sheen when seen in direct sunlight. The grain is tight and linear, with subtle golden or copper-toned striations running through its length. When cut, the heartwood displays a warm bronze coloration that darkens with age or repeated oiling. Although it feels heavier in the hand than ordinary wood, it remains noticeably lighter than forged steel, reducing the overall weight of equipment crafted from it.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Bronzewood is naturally hard and impact-resistant, possessing a hardness of 10 and approximately 20 hit points per inch of thickness. It does not warp easily under heat, nor does it splinter when properly seasoned. Unlike metal armor, bronzewood does not clang or ring loudly when struck, making it less obtrusive in woodland environments. Armor made from bronzewood does not impose armor check penalties on Stealth checks made among foliage, a property highly valued by Aerenal’s hunters, wardens, and silent guardians.
Origin & Source
Bronzewood trees grow only in Aerenal’s old-growth forests, particularly in groves tended by Aereni druids and undying caretakers. These groves are often protected, and harvesting typically requires permission, ritual observance, or direct oversight from the local deathless clergy. Attempts to cultivate bronzewood beyond Aerenal have met with limited success; the trees require soil enriched by the island’s unique spiritual resonance and centuries of patient cultivation.
History & Usage
History
For thousands of years, bronzewood has been a staple of Aereni craft tradition. Before the widespread use of steel on Khorvaire, bronzewood armor and blades were considered among the finest war gear available. Even after advances in metallurgy, bronzewood retained its status due to its symbolic connection to the ancestral forests and its practical advantages when stealth or quiet movement was required. The elves of Aerenal regard bronzewood armaments as extensions of the guardian role, rather than tools of conquest.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Among the Aereni, bronzewood carries a sense of continuity and remembrance. Armor and shields crafted from it often bear motifs of family lineages, ancestral animals, or memories of places held sacred. To gift bronzewood to another is considered a gesture of profound trust or duty. Among rangers and scouts abroad in Khorvaire, bronzewood is viewed as a sign of training or mentorship from an Aerenal tradition.
Refinement
Freshly harvested bronzewood is too rigid to work. It must be soaked and chemically treated, often using resins derived from the same forests, to render it malleable. Once shaped, it is gradually cured, polished, and sometimes lacquered depending on intended use. The refinement process is time-consuming and requires both woodworking and alchemical skill, which contributes to the material’s high cost.
Manufacturing & Products
Bronzewood may replace metal in breastplates, splint armor, banded mail, and full plate, provided the crafter has sufficient skill. For weapons, it can substitute for metal in most blades and striking surfaces, though flexible or chain-based weapons cannot be crafted from it. Finished equipment is approximately 10% lighter than steel equivalents, without sacrificing durability.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
The shavings and offcuts of bronzewood are collected and often burned as incense or used in ritual offerings, as discarding the wood carelessly is considered disrespectful. Over-harvesting is strongly discouraged, and the Aereni enforce strict limits; attempts to smuggle raw timber out of Aerenal are met with legal or diplomatic repercussions.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Bronzewood is considered semi-precious. Legal export is tightly monitored by Aerenal, and most large orders must be commissioned directly from recognized Aereni workshops. Outside Aerenal, bronzewood is sold in small quantities through reputable elven merchants or House Cannith enclaves who maintain crafting rights under negotiated agreements. Because of its rarity and cultural value, acquiring bronzewood without documentation is a notable crime in both Aerenal and Khorvaire, and possession of unmarked bronzewood equipment may draw unwanted attention.
