Spidersilk

Spidersilk is the by product of the Giant Spider found in the southern forests in the nation of Gromsh. This substance is woven into bolts of material and sold to manufacturers across the Shards to make clothing and accessories for the orcs. From shirts, to cloaks, even armor, this material plays a huge part in the orcish society.

Material Characteristics

Spidersilk looks like exactly what it is, strands of spider web. It is stronger than one would think.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The adhesive droplets that spiders apply to their silk become sticky only when the silk leaves the spider’s body. So that the properties of this silk, taken right from the spiders glands, isn't sticky when woven.

History & Usage

Discovery

Discovered by Fargeth Rendhan centuries ago on the island of Boltusk, the use of spidersilk has prospered ever since this great thinker devised that it could be put to use. It was he that also brought the idea of taming the great spiders that spun this fantastic material to light, while his wife thought of using the silk for armor.

Everyday use

Because spider silk is so flexible, light, strong, and water resistant, it has a great impact on orc society. It is used in clothing of all sorts and even armor.

Refinement

Spidersilk is woven with hand spinners into bolts then placed into a weaver.

The orcs hands are too big for this process but the elven female slaves are perfect for this part. These slaves are well treated and kept almost as friends rather than slaves, though they are still kept chained (as per the law)

Manufacturing & Products

Clothing of all kinds (gloves, shirts, cloaks , etc) and even armor. They have even made a spider silk rope that is three times as strong as hemp.

Distribution

Trade & Market

The Rendhan silk company handles major distribution of the bolts of silk to the many weavers scattered around the Shards. They don't actually make the clothing or armor, just the spinning process that gets it ready to be made. After that there are many different sellers of the clothing and armors.

Law & Regulation

The only laws on the sale of items made from Spidersilk pertain to the distribution of armor. Pieces of the armor can only be bought by licensed guards or slave lords, unless a permit is acquired from the warlord.

Rumors of a secret project have started to run wild around the Rendhan warehouses. Stories of a new type of ship reinforced by spidersilk have started to be whispered through certain slaves and workers. these rumors have been dismissed out of hand, but the mysterious disappearance of shipments and overstock can't be a coincidence. The fact that the silk gets stronger when exposed to water, and even expands when soaked is a huge leader to the stories of it being used along with the Blackstone in the Orcish Stone Ship. If this were to be true, the nation of Gromsh would have a fleet of ships able to withstand more damage than anything the other warlords had, putting them in the front of a long standing fight for rulership over all of the Shards.
