Siren's Call

Demographics

Siren's Call is a strange amalgam largely consisting of moreaus and other, more... exotic... races, some of which were thought to have gone extinct. There are merfolk that live in underwater caves in the lagoon who are quite friendly and often come ashore to interact with the other denizens of the island. There is a nest of harpies that live in the trees of the jungle who are also friendly, and cave-dwelling lamia who are less welcoming to visitors, but mostly friendly nonetheless. There is a small swamp on the island that is home to several fantastical races, such as slimefolk and lizardfolk.

Government

There is little government oversight of Siren's Call, as the Bahaman government at large would rather not put forth the risk and effort to police the island. Despite this, the island is rather self-sufficient. The goods and services are taxed by the city to keep it running, but it is small enough that tourist income alone keeps the place afloat.
That being said, there is a small government body known as the Siren's Council that has always been run exclusively by the women of the Ocessa Siren Clan. The council is usually composed of five members, but has had as few as three and as many as fifteen, always in odd numbers. Currently, there are seven, and they are all generally beloved by the populace. There have been few sirens who have not been adored by the citizens of Siren's Call, and those were voted out by the rest of the clan for being unpopular.

Defences

The only man-made defense is that of a gate that closes off the entrance to the lagoon. Otherwise, the maelstrom itself acts as deterrent.

Infrastructure

There are several watermills along the edges of the island, in the calmer inlets, where the island gets most of its power. There is also a fairly robust sewer system that pumps all waste straight into the maelstrom. There are few roads, and none of them are paved.

History

Siren's Call was formed when The Calypso Breach filled with water and began its maelstrom cycle at the end of the Final War. The island is actually a massive spike made of soul metal topped with a thick layer of sediment, as with the rest of the islands in the breach. It is a federal crime to mine soul metal from the islands, as that could destabilize the entire foundation of the island. Legends say there once was a magic spring somewhere on the island that spawned the merfolk and other such creatures that populate the island, but that it dried up over two centuries ago. Rather that's true or not remains a mystery, as the island's native inhabitants have no record of their past, and humans didn't show up for another fifty years or so. After that, a civilization quickly grew, and the place became a tourist destination for only the most daring of adventurers.

Tourism

The island gets the name "Siren's Call" from the anticipation visitors have of going to the brothel and sleeping with someone of one of the many unique races that call the island home. The brothel, also known as Siren's Call, makes a great deal of money off the fetishism surrounding their native populace. Mermaids and slime girls are particularly popular.

Architecture

Mostly wooden structures made from palm trees stand high on stilts with thatch roofs and multihued ocean glass windows.

Geography

The island is, obviously, quite humid, so plantlife flourishes across its surface. Most of the island is a tropical jungle, but there is a small chunk of swamp in there as well. The northern shore of the island is a sheer, rock cliff face constantly pummeled by the maelstrom's neverending barrage of water, whilst the south shore is a peaceful lagoon complete with sandy beach.
