City of Diamonds Settlement in Earth Beyond the Curtain | World Anvil

City of Diamonds

The City of Diamonds has been called many things by humans in ancient times. Atlantis, Tir-nan-Og, and countless others. Fairies and wizards call it Dundiamai, which apparently means "diamond fortress." It is, or was, impenetrable, surrounded by an enchanted dome shield made by the Fairy Queens themselves, before the line died out. But the thing about impenetrable shields is that eventually someone, or a lot of someones, eventually figure out a way around them.   Dundiamai was the capital of the United Queendom of Magic and remains the capital of its successor, the Magical Republic. It has been razed by two major wars and rebuilt more beautiful each time. Romulus is a native, and he always gets this weird loving look in his eyes talking about the beauty and strength of the City of Diamonds (he denies this). While I didn't see it before the Curtain was ripped away (obviously), I can say it is, even after being destroyed twice, awe-inspiring.

Demographics

Fairies: 68%   Wizards: 32%   Of these, 63% identify as white or European, 61% as African, 52% as Asian, 38% as Middle Eastern, and 34% as American Natives or Pacific Islanders (don't ask me why the government groups these together, it's got something to do with their old dividing of the world). Most (70%) identify as more than one of these categories.   Many residents, particularly the members of the Senate, are rather wealthy. Lower-level government workers in the vast bureaucracy are paid well, and many live in the sprawling, more rural outer sectors of the city.

Government

The city itself is run by a council of city aldermen, who are often retired Senators.

Defences

The great defense of the City of Diamonds has already been mentioned: the impenetrable diamond-like shield that can be activated to protect the city from (nearly) all intruders. Another of the city's defenses, though, is the fact that it can be moved from place to place--anywhere in the oceans of Earth. Today it usually remains in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Greece, but it was originally located off the coast of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean, where it sometimes returns, as if to visit.

Industry & Trade

The Capital takes in imports from all over the magical world (which is another use of its ability to move from place to place in the oceans). It mostly just exports laws, though its outer farming sectors also export fruits and nuts that grow exclusively on the island.

History

In ancient times, non-magic scholars and heroes would journey to Dundiamai to see its glory. Magic-users taught the non-magics their secrets, allowing them to bring back potions and enchanted items, for a price.   The first fairies were born in the City of Diamonds.   Then the Curtain was drawn, and the magical world went into hiding.   The Great Civil War destroyed the City of Diamonds, along with the queendom it represented, in 1873. In the aftermath, it was rebuilt in the image of a republic where both fairies and wizards would be able to influence the government.   Sofia Daven-Claiborne destroyed it again in 2016, and it has since been rebuilt with the non-magical population in mind once again.
