Chita Missile Base

The Chita Missile Base is a former Russian, now Siberian hardened ICBM bunker and abandoned research facility. The site was constructed in the 1960s during the First Cold War some distance from the city of Chita. It was considered top secret at the highest levels, and given specifically to the KGB to manage. This was due to the number of top-secret experiments also conducted at the base, supervised by the KGB. The records of what the KGB did at the facility have since been lost, but it is also apparant that the missile silo was made somewhat larger than the standard Soviet installations.

When the USSR fell in 1991, control over the facility was handed to the new Russian Federation. At some point between 1991 and the Siberian Revolution in 2026, the base had quietly been abandoned. Urban explorers rediscovered the base in 2034, but workers who went to dismantle the installation quickly discovered that the RS-24 Yars was missing all of its 10 nuclear warheads. The Russian government denied that they retrieved the warheads, stating that such an act would be a treaty violation. As such, there are now significant concerns that an unknown third party has acquired ten nuclear warheads. Although the warheads can theoretically only be armed with Russian Missile Force codes, hypothetically the security measures on them are not impenetrable to modern computers. However, as the weapons have been missing for over thirty years, they are likely now inoperable.
