When the Gnomes fled to Earedar, some refused to leave and stayed behind to fight against The Shadow until the end. These are called the Shadow Gnomes, as when their realm eventually fell, they were corrupted by the Shadow and sworn to it's service. Their branch of Gnomish is quite different from the traditional, as it has been bastardized by Infernal. They do however still use the Tig script.
