Marriage, Pregnancy and Children

Marriage

Many denizens of Earedar choose to bind themselves to another in marriage. If your character chooses to do so, you can go use various organizations to facilitate your marriage. While you may go through the following options, there are many others that are not listed:
Church of Light: The Church of the Light offers marriage services from it's shrines, temples and churches throughout Earedar. Normally available for a small fee of 5 sp for a basic ceremony (or much more expensive for a lavish one), almost all civilized nations recognize marriages given under this organization. This organization practices monogamy.
Order of the Crescent Wind: The Order of the Crescent Wind is an organization dedicated to the veneration of Aeoleth Morningstar. The Order operates in almost all of Earedar, and most often offers wedding services on the edges of civilization. Normally a small ceremony is available for a small fee of 1 sp, and more "expensive" options top out at around 20 sp if nicer accommodations are available. The Order does not care if you practice monogamy or polygamy.
Circle of Shadows: The Circle of Shadows often acts as priests and clerics in regions of Earedar that venerate The Shadow. The Circle operates in large swaths of Earedar openly, and offers wedding services in those areas. Normally a small ceremony costs upwards of 5 sp (or much more expensive for a lavish one). Very few civilized nations recognize marriages given under this organization. This organization practices monogamy.
Marriage grants you the following benefits:
  • If you die, your spouse inherits your property and vice versa.
  • Most kingdoms and city-states will tax you less.
  • Kingdoms and city-states looking to attract settlers may subsidize the purchase of a home for your family.
  • Children of this union will be considered legitimate by the courts.

Pregnancy

Many denizens of Earedar choose to indulge in the physical pleasure of life, and of course intercourse can result in pregnancy. If your character decides to get physical, depending on the fertility of their race, they may get pregnant. If there are different races involved in this activity, the percentage chance is determined by the female of that race, if there is one. Refer to the list below:
  • Humans: Humans are the most fertile of all the Elder Races. As such they have a 65% chance of pregnancy. Humans usually only have one child, but can have up to three (2% Chance of Triplets, 8% Chance of Twins). A human pregnancy lasts 9 months.
  • Elves: Elves have a particularly low birth rate. As such they have only a 30% chance of pregnancy. Elves only ever have one child. A elven pregnancy lasts 14 months.
  • Dwarfs: Dwarfs have one of the lower birth rates amongst the Elder Races. As such they have only a 40% chance of pregnancy. Dwarfs very rarely have twins (5% Chance). A dwarfen pregnancy lasts 10 months.
  • Oruki: Oruki have a higher birth rate, and as such they have a 55% chance of pregnancy. Oruki have twins more so than any other race (15% Chance). An oruki pregnancy lasts 9 months.
  • Lizardfolk: Lizardfolk are moderately fertile and as such they have a 50% chance of pregnancy. They also usually have 1-3 children at a time and hatch from eggs (33% Chance of Each). A lizardfolk pregnancy lasts 6 months.
  • Dragonborn: Dragonborn are less fertile than other Elder Races and as such have only a 45% chance of pregnancy. Dragonborn hatch from eggs and have a decent chance of having twins (10% Chance). A dragonborn pregnancy lasts 9 months.
  • Catfolk: Catfolk are almost as fertile as humans and as such have a 60% chance of pregnancy. They usually have 1-4 children at a time (25% Chance of Each). A catfolk pregnancy lasts 8 months.
  • Goblins: Goblins are very fertile and as such have a 55% chance of pregnancy. Goblins have a higher chance of twins than most others (10% Chance). A goblin pregnancy lasts 7 months.
  • Gnomes: Gnomes are not particularly fertile, and as such have a 40% chance of pregnancy. Gnomes have a very rare chance of twins (3% Chance). A gnome pregnancy lasts 10 months.
  • Aasimar and Tieflings: An aasimar or a tiefling is able to be born into any race with heritage from The Light or The Shadow. If the father is a tiefling or an aasimar there is a 50% chance the child will be the same, while if the mother is a tiefling or an aasimar that chance jumps up to 65%. Otherwise if the child has angelic or demonic heritage, the chance is simply 10%. If the child is an aasimar or a tiefling, there is a 10% chance of twins. The pregnancy's length matches their base race.

  • Changelings: A changeling can be born to any race. If the father is a changeling there is a 40% chance the child will be as well, while if the mother is a changeling that jumps up to 60%. Otherwise the child will be of the other parent's race. Changelings rarely have twins (1% Chance). The pregnancy's length is often 9 months.
  • Half Races: Half races are normally just slightly less fertile than humans and have a 60% chance of pregnancy. They almost never have twins (5% Chance) and a common pregnancy lasts 9 months.
  • Minotaurs: Minotaurs are a relatively normal race, and as such have a 50% chance of pregnancy. Minotaurs only ever have one child at a time, and a common pregnancy can last for up to 8 months.
  • Tortles: Tortles are a relatively infertile race, with a 40% chance of pregnancy. When they do give birth, they often lay eggs in clutches of 2-4 (25% Chance) and a common pregnancy lasts 7 months.

Prevention

If your character does not wish to become pregnant, you may simply practice safe intercourse. If you declare this before you decide to get physical, your chance of pregnancy drops to 5%. Small, but not impossible.

Termination

If you decide not to continue on with your pregnancy, you may choose to end it at any time before you are due by visiting a local priest, cleric or druid and partaking of moon tea with no consequences.

Side-Effects

If you become pregnant, your body will change. Reference the chart below:

Children

While many parents choose to end their adventuring days when they have children, you may choose not to. One parent may stay home and watch the children, or you may leave them with a wet nurse, a nanny or an organization to raise them. Children do not have to be the end of your adventuring career.
