33: Opportunists
General Summary
The party makes their way to the Headman's Drink, ahead of their covert meeting with Commander Vereena Pembroke. They chat with Marcello, who believes control of the city changes little for 'normal people'. Garin approached him several days ago for information about Brisburg and hired muscle. Ahriman offers to pay Marcello handsomely for his discretion during the upcoming meeting and security.
Back in the Brisburg Barracks, Garin reminisces with Throd and says that an order to assassinate a Morgardian high lord prompted him to leave the Keldan and the company. Such tactics and the lack of composure and control aren't characteristic of Keldan, raising suspicion of something else at work.
Commander Pembroke meets the group and talks about Keldan and the siege. Despite leading Brisburg's militia on behalf of Morgard, her aim is the liberation of the city. Constance Verindin suddenly arrives with Morgardian troops to forcefully retrieve the party on Keldan's orders. The party successfully fights off the attachment. Learning Marcello betrayed them for a larger payout, the group takes an unconscious Constance and hides in the city.
Meanwhile, Garin is invited to dinner with Keldan, Throd and a man calling himself The Broker. They detail their upcoming trip to Morgard to convince the High Lord to start the conquest of the dwarven strongholds, Fuirigh and Mhannain. Keldan seems to defer to the Broker, who is apparently responsible for the 'hellish red' sword he can summon and for the 'changes' in Throd and the rest of the Grey Company. The Broker also expresses interest in Garin's current group. After the dinner, Garin details what he's learned in a letter and sends it to the party via Powl.
The rest of the party considers their next steps after receiving Garin's letter. Ataraxia is magically contacted by the Broker who also comes in person to retrieve Constance. After expressing interest in Ataraxia and her lineage, a deal is quickly struck, Garin will be returned to the group and Commander Pembroke's actions will go unnoticed. In exchange, Constance will be returned and a vial of Ataraxia's blood must be offered at dawn.
