Etrye

The Golden Finger of Ocrya

If ye are searchin' for a good time, look no further than good ol' Etrye! But don't forget to bring yer wallet! - Daerrom Bottlebane, famous dwarven merchant
Etrye is Ocryas richest country. It deals in all sorts of luxurious goods such as wine, rare metals, gemstones, exotic creatures and plants. Large vineyards and sprawling cities span the northern part of the country, while the southern part is focused on seafaring and trading. Etryan wine is known all over the world, and travellers and merchants from all continents can be encountered in Etrye's massive capital city Qakkah.

Structure

Prior to a recent expansion in the government, Etrye was ruled solely by a long line of sultans, originally hailing from Edria. About 130 years ago however, the sultan at the time founded a council consisting of the richest people in the country that took over most of his responsibilities and tasks. Furthermore, the general populace finally gained a more important role when the council made the decision to put a few important choices up to public votings. Nowadays, while the Sultan doesn't have a lot of responsibilities, he still has the right to overrule any decisions made by the council and the populace, securing the continuation of his family's rule.

Public Agenda

Etrye is primarily a trading nation. They export goods such as wine, lifestock and minerals to civilizations all over the world and they are the primary source of imported goods in all of Ocrya, with the harbour of Qakkah being the largest trade station in the known world.
Etryans mostly are a friendly and welcoming people, but they still are rather cautious, especially when regarding new people. It's easy to make friends with an Etryan, but gaining their trust is a much harder task.
On the political side of things, the Sultan and the Council have both decided to stay as neutral as possible, only interfering in other countries' problems when it also directly affects Etrye.

Assets

Etryan Wine is known and loved all over the world, which is why a vast part of the northern half of Etrye is covered in vineyards. It has been Etrye's primary exported ware for a long time, and it doesn't seem like that will change anytime in the near future. Etryum, a rare metal that has so far only been found on the large island of Etryos near Qakkah, is another important export good. It can be used to forge very durable weapons and armor and has a certain flexibility to it that makes it an important ingredient in a few types of machinery, including multi-chambered firearms. Fabricated goods exported to the rest of the world consist of ships, trained creatures, weapons and magnificent jewellery and furniture.
The Etryan military, while a bit small, is also a force to be reckoned with - what it lacks in manpower, it more than makes up in firepower. Its most famous unit - the legendary Elephant Knights, who ride on Elephants that are equipped with massive cannons on their backs - are known and admired all over the world with many militaries trying to build up similar units, although mostly to no avail.

History

The earliest evidence of the Etryan civilization can be dated back to about 2657 BF and was found on the island of Etryos near modern day Etrye's coast. It first consisted of a group of people from both Ocrya and Edria, which lead to their descendants light brown skin tones and slightly Edrian features. While early Etrya consisted mostly of humans, there were a few Elves and Dwarves too, leading to the comparably large percentage of half-elves in modern day Etryes population.
For about 600 years the early Etryans remained on Etryos, soon founding their first real city, Qrego, on the coast on the Island. In the year 1995 BF however, a different civilization from the mainland arrived in Etryos and convinced them to settle on the mainland under the guise of friendship, while in actuality they just wanted more unrestricted access to the resources on the island. Fooled by the newcomers friendly and seemingly honest demeanor, many Etryans took the journey to the mainland, leaving behind only a smidge of their populace.
Once they arrived on the mainland, they quickly started to settle, founding their first settlement - Qakkah - on the edge of the now destroyed land bridge that once connected Ocrya and Edria. Due to the friendly and open nature of the Etryans, Qakkah attracted many immigrants from Edria, quickly growing in size, reputation and power. Only about 80 years after its founding, Qakkah was the largest city on the Etryan peninsula, dwarfing the settlements of the people who tricked them into leaving Etryos. Soon, the Etryans started to expand and slowly started to settle further and further north, founding cities such as Qovale and Qarayah and starting their first wine businesses.
After the council of Medora disbanded in 57 AF, Etrye finally declared themselves as an actual country under the rule of the family that led their voyage onto the peninsula that they now called home. Qakkah soon became known as the main trading station of Ocrya after completion of a massive construction project expanding its harbour, and the Etryans quickly grew in power, wealth and population. Since then, not much has changed besides the modernization of many cities, with Etrye still thriving and growing everday.

"Bottlebane" is an incredibly apt nickname for a dwarf :D   It's a good article with a nice, tone-setting header image.   Some thoughts after reading it:

It deals in all sorts of luxurious goods such as wine, rare metals and gemstones and exotic creatures and plants.
You've got three "and"s in a row there. It'd probably rather smoother with just one, at the end.
Nowadays, while the Sultan doesn't have a lot of responsibilities, he still has the right to overrule any decisions made by the council and the populace, securing the continuation of his bloodline.
I'd consider splitting this sentence up a bit. Something like "Nowadays, the Sultan does not have many responsibilities. He retains the right to overrule any decision made by the Council." for example.   Also not sure how that secures his continuation of the bloodline? Also decisions by "the people"? This place seems pleasant enough, but sounded more like an oligarchy than a democracy. :D
Etrye is primarily a trading nation.
What is it that makes them such a successful trading power? Is it their geographic location? Naval traditions? Tremendously skilled diplomats?
Etryan Wine is known and loved all over the world, which is why a very large part of the northern half of Etrye is covered in vineyards.
Instead of "a very large", consider using a single, more punch words. Vast, expansive, great, for instance. :)   How large is the country? I didn't get a good feel for its size. You don't need to give us an exact number of square miles, but are we talking large, small, etc?   What is the climate like? You mention elephants, so it makes me think sort of Indian-ish perhaps, but there's not a lot of details about it.   What's the geography like? Are there mountains, deserts, great rivers or lakes, or anything else that stands out for interest?   That's what I can think of right now. It's a great start and I look forward to seeing how it turns out. :)

Oh dear, that is one long comment! Thanks a lot! :)
First of all, thank you for pointing out the little spelling "errors", i have no idea how i didn't notice them at first!

Regarding the government, it is a weird mixture of an oligarchy and a democracy. The council can freely decide to give a decision over to the public and because the sultan is still the highest member of the government, he could overrule the decisions of the council or public.

The reason Etrye is so succesful is a mixture of skilled diplomacy, the geographic location of the capital and the abundance of assets they own. They were also one of the first people to trade intercontinentially, so that certainly helped with building up their reputation and skill.

While it is the second smallest country on the continent, it would still be quite large for our standards, mainly because there only are 6 countries in Ocrya. The climate in the northern parts is similar to Italy, while the southernmost parts of the peninsula have an Indian-ish climate.

As for the geography, the northern part of Etrye is quite hilly with some larger forests and there even is a small mountain range near the border to Medora, while the southern part becomes more and more flat and vegetation becomes more tropical and a bit more scarce. There also are a few rivers and lakes, mostly in the nothern part of the country.

Once again, thank you so much for your detailed comment, and also thank you for getting my worldbuilding gears turning on full power!

It's hard to notice the small errors, because we know what it's supposed to look like in our heads. :)   These are all excellent answers to the questions. Add them to the article, really helps flesh it out :D     Glad I could help! Have fun writing!

I like the brief description of the relationship between the Sultan and his council, it reminds me of the ideas I've been kicking around for one of my countries. As for questions, Qurilion nailed a whole lot of them, one of do have, however, is what do the AF and BF year notations refer to?

Thanks a lot for the comment!
AF and BF refer to the times Before and After the Founding of the Council of Medora, an era-changing event on the continent of Ocrya.

The assets of this nation are interesting. Especially the wine, oddly enough. I hope you'll allow me to share some thoughts.   With wine being so plentiful, it can really fit more into their culture. For example; A child, at birth, can be given four barrels of wine. One to sell when they want, one to drink from when they are sad, one to drink from when they are happy and one to drink when they feel they are nearing the end of their life. Local idioms like "you can tell a lot about a man by the weight of his barrel of woes." These little things can really bring their culture to the forefront and make them pop.

Etryans mostly are a friendly and welcoming people, but they still are rather cautios, especially when regarding new people. It's easy to make friends with an Etryan, but gaining their trust is a much harder task.
This sounds like you can make an easy ally or acquaintance of an Etryan but not easily make real friends. You also missed a "u" in "cautious" but that is just me nit-picking.
The Etryan military, while a bit small, is also a force to be reckoned with - what it lacks in manpower, it more than makes up in strength.
Do they make up for lack of manpower with firepower? It felt clunky reading they make up for lack of manpower with strength but that could be a me problem.   I don't want to seem harsh but I like the ideas for this location and I would love to see you dig more gems from the idea. I hope these ideas help.

Thank you so much for this comment!
First of all, i love your idea with the four barrels of wine and i'd love to use it if that's alright with you! Regarding the military, i did mean firepower, but for some reason i wrote strength instead. No idea why, but i changed it now!

Go for it, I am glad that it was well received really and honestly I hope it inspires you to look into how other resources and assets can be woven into their culture.
