Edleth the Shrewd Character in Dwarven Spring | World Anvil

Edleth the Shrewd

Other Names: Shinare - The Bountiful One, The Winged One, The Scales, Balance, Merchant of the Gods, Goldeneye, Chainbreaker, Emancipator.   Symbol: A merchant's scale laden down with steel coins.   Constellation: Edleth the Shrewd does not have a readily recognizable constellation because her celestial symbol is her planet.   Colors: Gold, silver, copper.   Patron of: Wealth, industry, commerce, freedom, power, traders, merchants, moneylenders, business owners, teamsters, caravaners.   Known Avatars:
  • A portly, wealthy, middle-aged human matron wearing expensive clothing and jewelry. She has an elaborate hair-do held up by many combs and pins made of precious metals and large jewels and wears a fine silver chain around her waist.
  • A Daewar merchant dressed similarly to her female avatar. Because dwarves so espouse her philosophies, she acquiesces to their stubborn insistence that she is male. Minor concerns such as gender should not stand in the way of progress.
Edleth the Shrewd is the goddess of wealth, industry, and commerce. While she is most popular among the dwarves, she also finds many followers among merchants, mercenaries, and profit-minded adventurers of other races. All folk consider her the champion of freedom and self-determination. Her consort is Sindar the Alchemist, god of flame and the creative spark. Their relationship shows the stress of their opposite personalities—Sindar is temperamental and artistic while Edleth is calm and pragmatic—but for reasons not even Mistral the Book understands they remain together.   The Merchant of the Gods cannot tolerate laziness for she ascribes poverty to stupidity or sloth. In her eyes, those who are idle and unproductive are slowly dying. She views war-torn Ansalon as a place that needs rebuilding. She calls her worshippers to work hard at reconstructing their ruined glory. She aggressively recruits followers, claiming that only industry and progress can save Ansalon. Though beleaguered by her capricious mate Sindar, Edleth considers her greatest foe to be Hitax the Fraud, god of corrupt business.

Duties of the Priesthood

Priests of The Merchant Queen are industrious. They work hard to amass wealth and prestige, but they must not be greedy. Their work must serve the greater community and they must wisely spend their money for the benefit of all. Her priests must dress in the best clothing they can afford and adorn their weapons with gems and precious metals.   Edleth the Shrewd occasionally deposits gems or precious metals in the pockets of priests who oppose Sindar's plans. She seeks not to harm her mate, but to hamper his ambitious plans. But her truest enemy is the false merchant and perverter of contracts, Hitax the Fraud.
