Mithral Empire

The Mithral Empire was the ancient Elven Empire. The capitol was based in the modern lands of the Moon Elves, although the Empire's lands stretched across most of the western and eastern continents. Elven outposts and towns were settled in the Underdark.
Elves are an inherently magical race. Over time, the magical energies of the lands settled by the Mithral Empire shaped the Elves who resided there, creating distinct subraces of Moon Elves, Dark Elves, and Wood Elves.
Civil war severely weakened the Mithral Empire, with the Betrayal of the Dark Elves killing many. In the depleted state, the Mithral Empire was unable to maintain its far-flung holdings against the rising powers of humans and other races. The Moon Elves retreated to their homelands and the Wood Elves sought their own path forward.
The Moon Elves, Wood Elves, and Dark Elves all share a common ancestry in the Mithral Empire. Many human cultures, especially the Lurians and their successors, were influenced by the Mithral culture. Ruins from the time of the Mithral Empire can be found in many lands.
