The Burnt Plains

Geography

The Burnt plains are a large section of Dunya and make up the territory of the kingdom of Ates, however it is mostly unspoiled and to some extent unexplored. The landscape is mostly flat, covered in a dark soil and growing plenty of undergrowth and plant life, as well as sustaining many ecosystems. The reason for this fertility is the now dormant volcano to the North east, Mt Vuur, which was disturbed in the beforetimes by the Bright burner and the Darkflame causing it to blanket the grasslands with a nutrient rich ash allowing for rapid growth.   Most travelling through the plains to the City of Ates will often come across the rivers that sprawl through the plains near the centre, or travellers come across the large lake that is the start of these rivers. These rivers can be quite fast or wide and so crossing is normally done at the bridges constructed over the major sections, although many inhabitants of the plains earn a living guiding and ferrying people around.

Fauna & Flora

All many of grassland creatures from Lions to Deer to Elephant and Giraffe can be found here, as well as a variety of grasses and small trees. The region is also home to many birds, scavengers like Vulture, carnivores like Eagles. It is also home to larger and more fantastical species like Griffons, their cousins the Hippogriff as well as the related Peryton.   Like most places in Dunya, minor and major elementals have been known to form around the plains or enter from portals leading to the Plane of Fire. These can be as simple as fire or smoke Mephits to larger individuals such as Fire Elementals, the occasional lost Myrmidon. Sometimes animals from the plains are warped by the natural energies and so sights such as Fire Snakes and Fire beetles, sometimes Giant Fire Beetles. are common.

Natural Resources

The main resource of the Burnt plains is that of biodiversity, as the population enjoys a wide variety of ingredients and dishes as well as exotic animals as pets or work animals. There is abundant fresh water to be found near the rivers and lake as well as below ground. The ground itself is a mix of ashy dirt and clay, so many structures are constructed from clay bricks instead of wood or stone. There is stone and ore to be found throughout the plains but most of it is found in and around Mt Vuur, so it is often subject to legal concern as well as spiritual as the Kingdom of Ates often forbids excursions onto the Mt unless it is of the utmost importance. Wood is a precious resource in the plains as there is no large gathering and often any trees are of minimal size. However this is not too much of a concern as due to the inhabitants natural abilities, warmth and light are a wave of the hand away, although some travellers without these abilities may find the nights colder and darker than they are used to unless they come prepared.
