Mt Vuur

Design

Mt Vuur is 20,000 to 25,000 ft tall at it's peak and dominates the landscape of The Burnt Plains, being visible from anywhere in the region. It is unknown what the inside caverns and magma caves look like as well as the area around the vent in the peak. All that is known is that the volcano hasn't stirred in a very long time and the Kingdom of Ates is keen to keep it that way.

Sensory & Appearance

The closer to Mt Vuur and the higher up you travel the hotter and heavy the air becomes, ash drifts up from every footfall and most plants are structures of dust and ash left undisturbed since the last eruption and prone to collapse at the slightest contact.   The air smells like sulphur and smoke and every breath takes in the ash on the wind, unseen lower down but becoming thicker and thicker the higher it goes until it becomes a complete choking smog around the vent.   The only sounds are that of magma bubbling below, the occasional small rumble and the laboured breathing of those nearby. Nothing else disturbs the slope and above the 3/4 mark it is rare to see any life larger than a resilient insect, even the elementals the beings made from ash and fire avoid moving or making noise here as if they fear waking up something bigger than them.

Denizens

The lower regions of Mt Vuur are home to every form and species of fire, ash and smoke elemental and they are more than happy to tear each other, and travellers, apart to prove dominance or to claim territory from a rival.   The higher up the slope, the older, stronger and bigger the elementals get and many possess a certain intellect that can make them dangerous foes or unlikely allies depending on the goal at hand.   Towards the very peak of the volcano, nothing lives. Nothing has been recorded there, nothing ever seen to move amongst the smog and often any researcher or adventurer foolish enough to reach that high will never come back down.

Valuables

The only resource worth the time to gather or research on Mt Vuur is it's untapped elemental energy, theorised to contain enough energy to vaporise the entire plane of existence three times over. Many researchers covet this as they believe it could provide enough power to make previous creations possible through sheer brute force. However few have ever managed to claim it and fewer still have lived to tell of it.

Hazards & Traps

Beyond the angry elementals of the lower slopes, the steep inclines and potential rock falls of the climb itself and lack of sustenance available the climb to upper parts of Vuur is safe.   Beyond the devious and ancient elementals, the toxic air and the blinding smoke the upper parts of Vuur is safe.   Above this, the danger is unknown for it cannot be observed or detected, magically or otherwise, and all attempts to gather first hand information have led to no survivors, no returning heroes and no understanding.

Alterations

Dotted across the peak and the surrounding landscape are a number of small shrines and churches, some new, some ancient, all abandoned.
