Kingdom of Ates

Structure

The Kingdom of Ates is governed by a line of monarchs, typically through the male line but there have been exceptions. The leader of the kingdom is the King and then in order of seniority The Crown Prince, The Queen and then the rest of the children, male line first, by age.   In terms of responsibility the King theoretically deals with all the day to day management of the kingdom however in reality they hire advisers or hand off some responsibilities to their children so that they can learn and to take the less important matters away from the King.

Public Agenda

The Kingdom of Ates is motivated first by self preservation and the removal of any and all threats to their way of life, internal or external. Beyond this they hold true to their old fashioned and somewhat tribal ways.   The main ways being to side with family and blood relations over outsiders, to be loyal to the monarchy and the kingdom and to never forget the importance of fire in the grand scheme of things.

History

The Kingdom of Ates places it's roots in the original myth of the four guardians, being one of the tribes to participate in the Great War as well as being almost wiped out and then saved by the guardians. The Atessian tale goes further, claiming their guardian came down to them afterwards and set forth a way of life and the laws and customs they still hold, the guardian also told them to hold true to their monarchy however this is disputed by scholars as propaganda   In recorded history, the Kingdom of Ates has been prosperous but reclusive, avoiding expansion into their territories as well as keeping immigration and emigration to a minimum. However some do leave the city to enjoy life out in the Burnt Plains which is an easy endeavour due to the unnaturally fertile ground there. These people are often less proud and more welcoming to outsiders, however those within the city treat them with slight disdain when the groups interact.   Within recent history however an unprecedented effort to collect more resources has begun under the reign of King Surtas, including the construction of farms, quarries and factories as well as villages and outposts. The reason for this sudden expansion is unknown beyond the King and his Crown prince, however some more paranoid in the other kingdoms fear that the Atessians seek to prove their superiority through war and may be willing to bring the world down around them to do it.

Demography and Population

90% of the people of the Kingdom of Ates can be found within the walled city of Ates itself, due to their holding true to the old ways of clustering together as a tribal group. Those that have left the city, either due to wanderlust or a desire to start over are often considered just as bad as outsiders to more traditional citizens.   the 10% out in the plains either set up small villages along trade routes and act as stopping points for merchants or travellers. This typically leads to a sunnier disposition towards others that isn't shared by those in the city but their relative kindness to others has made these villages prosperous and profitable for those who don't want to stay within the city.

Territories

The kingdom owns all of the Burnt plains, however they haven't developed the lands and some has been unexplored/ undocumented for decades. The other Kingdoms are always offering to buy sections for their own use but the Kingdom of Ates refuses on the basis of keeping their ancestral home, as in the Beforetimes the tribe wandered all over the plains in a nomadic style. They also claim that portions of the Mineral wastes are their sovereign territory however this is hotly contested by the Kingdom of Ocros

Military

The army of Ates is a formidable one, as it combines the old ways of tribes conducting warfare involving everyone available and mixes it with modern equipment and training.   All citizens within Ates has to go through basic training when they reach adulthood, the age of which depends on the race. During this time they learn how to fight with martial weaponry, within formations and some talented members learn more refined control of their magical skills.   Those who stay on become trained soldiers, learning to use more complex weapons and advanced formations. Those who had magical talent are trained in evocation magic and become battle mages. The ones with strong elemental talent become known as Pyromancers, individuals with the destructive power of a siege weapon and who are trained to use it.   If a soldier exhibits both strong martial and magical tendencies they can enlist as a member of the Flaming wing, an elite force who use their natural elemental strengths as a way to manoeuvre and travel the battlefields unhindered, with the best being capable of limited flight. This group is also where recruits for the royal guard are pulled, those who demonstrate a desire to serve their King and kingdom at the highest level.

Technological Level

While the Kingdom is by and large old fashioned and slow to adopt new technologies and techniques, they recognise the danger of being behind in military strength. This means that few among them work directly to create or innovate new products, but they are willing to trade and appropriate the use of things such as black powder, firearms and constructs. This lack of innovation is often what leads many to leave the city in search of new experiences and sights, as well as more scholarly individuals leaving to find a home more welcoming of their pursuits.   However it is said the current Crown prince has been trying to encourage more individuals to take up this academic lifestyle, but to what end it is unknown.

Trade & Transport

The Kingdom deals with limited trade, mostly trade is only for merchants who set up in the city and negotiate it themselves. This is partly due to the distance between the kingdom, as well as lack of materials that the Kingdom cannot provide for itself.   When they do trade it is typically with the Kingdom of Ocros, exchanging food, animals and other biological material that the Iron Hills lack in exchange for rare metals, military equipment and new technologies that benefit them.

Infrastructure

The self sustaining city of Ates holds huge brickwork granaries for storing excess food, as well as aqueducts and wells to obtain water from the surroundings. Within the brick outer wall and its regular towers and defensive equipment, the citizens enjoy all manner of social buildings such as theatres and art galleries alongside civil buildings such as schools and apothecaries.
