Shifting Hands' subterranean safehouse

The Shifting Hands' subterranean safehouse is a place of hidden wealth, danger, and intrigue, tucked deep beneath the warehouse district of Hin’s Drift. Accessible only through secret entrances, this expansive and well-fortified hideaway is the guild’s nerve centre—a hub of illicit activity, a luxurious lair, and a strategic base from which the guild conducts its shadowy dealings.

The safehouse is not just a base of operations; it is also a place of secrecy, where the guild plans, rests, and recovers from the dangers of their underworld dealings. However, those who seek the services of the Shifting Hands—whether for smuggling goods or seeking protection—will find that nothing comes for free. The guild operates on a strict code of loyalty and profit, and anyone who wants to use the safehouse's facilities or make use of the guild’s expertise must pay a price, either in coin, services, or favors. In the heart of Hin's Drift, the Shifting Hands' subterranean safehouse is a place where wealth and danger collide. It’s a space where secrets are kept, deals are made, and the shadowy underworld of the town thrives. Amidst the smell of the sewer, the echoes of the river, and the wealth accumulated over years of criminal enterprise, the safehouse is a symbol of the guild’s dominance and the dangerous power they wield.

Design

The safehouse is a sprawling, multi-chambered structure made from rough-hewn stone and sturdy timber, showing the wealth and power the Shifting Hands have accumulated over the years. The architecture of the building has a rough, utilitarian feel that speaks to its origins as a hidden base of operations, but over time, the guild has added lavish touches to make the space more comfortable for its inhabitants, especially those who spend considerable time here.

The safehouse is a labyrinth of interconnected rooms, each serving a specific purpose for the guild’s operations—some are offices for the guild's leaders and trusted members, while others are storage rooms filled with smuggled goods waiting to be moved. There are living quarters for the guild’s most important figures, complete with luxurious furnishings, thick tapestries, and opulent beds—a stark contrast to the filth of the sewers just outside.

Sensory & Appearance

The wooden floors, well-maintained and clean, creak underfoot, and the air is often thick with the smell of fine spices, incense, and tobacco. The rooms are designed to keep both comfort and security in mind, featuring sturdy furniture, secret compartments, and hidden doors for those who need to disappear quickly. Yet, despite the wealthy appointments, the ever-present smell of the sewer creeps in from the underground tunnels and waterways. Musty, dank odours from the nearby sewer system permeate the walls, and no matter how many scented oils or incense sticks are burned to mask them, the stale air and decaying refuse of the city’s underbelly always manage to linger. The more affluent rooms are better protected from these odours, but the deeper, more utilitarian parts of the safehouse—such as the storage rooms and entrances leading to the sewers—are thick with the smell of earth, mildew, and rotting organic matter.

Contents & Furnishings

Despite the gritty realities of its location, the safehouse exudes an air of opulence and dangerous luxury. The guild's leaders, such as the Daymaster and the Night Mistress, each have their own rooms furnished with fine fabrics, embroidered pillows, and heavy curtains to keep out the light and noise from the world above. There is a sense of calculated comfort—rich woollen rugs, polished wood, and ornate carvings give the rooms a sense of wealth, though everything has a functional, hidden edge, from concealed compartments in the furniture to hidden exits in the walls. The common areas of the safehouse are comfortable but practical—workbenches cluttered with maps, documents, and weapons, and open spaces designed for meetings or briefings. Guild members often gather in these areas to discuss their operations, trade rumours, or to plan their next big heist. Tables are often covered in rich foods, fine wines, and exotic treats—all a way to maintain the appearance of power, wealth, and success. Yet, beneath this apparent prosperity, every room in the safehouse is always watched, every passage is monitored, and every action could be a potential betrayal. The guild’s leaders trust no one completely. The guild’s guards—usually gnomes and halflings—keep watch over the safehouse's entrances and tunnels, ensuring that no one unauthorized can enter or leave without detection. Those who are caught trying to infiltrate the guild's secrets often end up as permanent residents of the safehouse’s darkest rooms, where they are dealt with swiftly and without mercy.

Environmental Effects

One of the most impressive features of the safehouse is its cavernous subterranean harbor, a vast underground docking area that serves as the gateway to the outside world for the Shifting Hands. This harbor is large enough to house multiple rowboats and small skiffs, used to transport goods to and from the guild’s hideout, where they are unloaded from larger sloops and river traders that dock at the public or private river docks above. The underground dock is an expansive and well-protected area, where the guild's contraband is unloaded with practiced ease. Rowboats are used for quieter, smaller loads, while larger boats and sloops dock at a hidden cove to unload more substantial shipments, their cargo covered in tarps to hide the illicit nature of their contents. The cavern itself is illuminated by dim, flickering lanterns, casting long shadows across the stone walls, creating an atmosphere of secrecy and unease. The distant sounds of flowing water and the occasional creak of wood from boats rocking gently on the river echo throughout the cavern, adding to the sense of isolation and hidden danger. At the farthest end of the harbor, hidden behind stone walls, is a small supply room for the guild’s most trusted members, where they store barrels of goods, firearms, and covert equipment used for smuggling.
