The Divine Coup Military Conflict in Droswal | World Anvil

The Divine Coup

The Divine Coup of Southern Espere was the culmination of Begild's efforts during the Southern Esperean Consolidation War.

The Conflict

Prelude

Princess Begild of Kythelum decided that Dubain should be deposed before the start of the Southern Esperean Consolidation War, when she discovered he and Ameya were responsible for the Soul Crisis of Espere. Begild determined through divination that conquering Kythelum's surrounding nations was part of the path to victory in her rebellion against the malign Patron. The collective sentiment of the combined armies created a potent magical "mood" that allowed for more of a direct assault than is typically possible against deities.   In order to amplify her own magical power, Begild constructed a network of Pulse Totems that allowed her to further weaponize the collective mood of the nations she propagandized in her favor throughout the course of the war.   The sword Felsader, discovered in the Bergsclans, was given to Almaer of Kythelum as part of Begild's plan. The fragment of the Heart Stone that created Dubain was capable of piercing his divine flesh.

Deployment

In order to commence the battle, Begild used her empowered magic to force Dubain into the physical world, using a modified version of the spell that elves cast in their horn-breaking ceremonies. On a human target, the spell makes ethereal anatomy visible and tangible; since deities can render themselves fully ethereal, the supercharged version of the spell was necessary to prevent an easy escape by Dubain.   With their target rooted to the same plane as them, the forces under Kythelum's command faced down their negligent Patron.

Outcome

After realizing the marshalled human forces posed an actual threat, Dubain retreated from Droswal and consequently abdicated his position as Patron of Southern Espere.

Aftermath

Overthrowing a deity served as a concrete demonstration of the feats that a united human force was capable of, vindicating Kythelum's propaganda during the Consolidation War. The five nations contributing to the Fivefold Army would go on to become founding members of the Kythel Federation.   Dubain's retreat from Droswal exposed him to the corruptive influence of the Fountain of Will.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The vacant role of Patron of Southern Espere would go on to be filled by two new deities: an ascended Begild of Kythelum, propelled by the widespread support she drummed up during the war, and the chained patron Dubyre. Each of these new Patrons would give rise to their respective clergies, which vie for influence in the Kythel Federation.

In Literature

Begild's plan to enact the Divine Coup was found within her personal journals and adapted into the book of Apotheosis within the New Begildan Manifesto. Apotheosis also details the process by which Begild was converted into the new Patron of Southern Espere.
