Dragonborn
"Dragonborn" is an adjective that may refer to any creature that has gone through draconic transmutation, but the word is only used as a standalone noun when speaking of humanoids that either underwent that process or are descended from other dragonborn humanoids.
The dragonborn do not have a name in Draconic. Some dragons metaphorically call dragonborn that they made aku ("son") or akusha ("daughter"), but none extend the same terminology to dragonborn that aren't their own.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Dragonborn fall into two main categories: jajaksish ("human(s)") and kushoka (lit. "dog(s)").
A dragonborn that's a jajaksish is a humanoid who was granted draconic traits by a dragon. Most transmuted dragonborn are the "children" of a metallic dragon. Chromatic dragons are equally capable of transmuting humans, they're just less willing on average. Some examples of traits often added by the dragon through the transmutation are increased overall bulk, various degrees of scale coverage, a breath weapon, claws, damage resistance, wings, sharpened senses, magical powers, and tails.
A dragonborn that's a kushoka is a kobold that has been upgraded in stature. These dragonborn range in appearance from overgrown kobold to small bipedal dragon, but they never look human enough to pass for anything other than a dragonborn without a serious (probably magical) disguise.
The particulars of a dragonborn's appearance, beyond what's determined by the above two categories, depends on their scale color and other factors.
Genetics and Reproduction
First-generation dragonborn are created from other humanoids by dragons.
Two kushoka of the same scale color can produce dragonborn offspring. A kushoka dragonborn and a kobold can make only kobolds, and mixing kushoka colors creates kobolds even if no kobolds went into the process.
Jajaksish remain compatible with their original race, though the dragon blood will thin out with successive generations of such pairings. Two dragonborn whose original races would produce viable offspring can have children that are just as draconic as themselves, or even more so. Alloyed metallic scale colors usually more closely resemble one parent than the other, but the possibility of more complicated results does exist. Blending chromatic scale colors, on the other hand, is much more likely to lead to unexpected results. "Metallicness" is a binary trait, meaning it either is or isn't inherited by each the child of a metallic-chromatic pairing — there's no "half-metallic" middle ground.
A pairing of a kushoka and a jajaksish will produce no children, regardless of other variables.
Growth Rate & Stages
First-generation dragonborn have anywhere from one to five decades added to their lifespan.
Second-generation jajaksish are born as the race they would have been without any dragon blood involved. Their draconic traits manifest over time, with a significant increase during puberty. Again, their lifespan is somewhere between one and five decades longer than it otherwise would have been.
Second-generation kushoka, when they arise, are fully dragonborn for their entire lives. They reach adulthood after about 20 years, and die before two centuries have elapsed, or earlier in the case of accidents, disease, violence, or something of that nature.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The ability to digest anything and everything is not among the list of traits that dragons tend to bestow. Jajaksish eat what they did before becoming draconic.
Like kobolds, kushoka are almost entirely carnivorous.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Like all humanoids, dragonborn can be used as a source of spirit filaments. This is illegal.
Additionally, dragonborn serve as one of the less dangerous sources of dragon scales. This is also illegal.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Dragonborn are found in the same places as dragons and other related creatures. Namely, Syaodukosh and parts of Droswal. Since dragons in Droswal can still make dragonborn, dragonborn are more common in Droswal than one would probably expect. Not by a lot, but noticably.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Dragonborn are hard to generalize, but none of them have innately worse senses than a human would in the same circumstances.
Civilization and Culture
Major Language Groups and Dialects
The main language of Syaodukosh is Syaotsikash, the language of dragons. It's not a language that makes much use of lips; hissing and other harsh sounds make up the bulk of the draconic sound inventory.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
When dragons create dragonborn, it's often in exchange for favors from whoever they use as a base.
Dragonborn are not as united in terms of reputation and specialty as many of the other humanoids in Droswal. They serve as an extension of dragons, with all the potential baggage that that brings, but most hold the identity of dragonborn as something they've become, commonly in service of some end that was firmly rooted in who they once were, rather than as a core part of their identity.
Average Physique
Dragonborn are draconic in nature, and draconic nature is bulky.
