Session 88

General Summary

Did You Say a Full-Body Suit?

Standing outside the Temple, the Deep End decided to make a quick trip back to the Nacheevi Technical Institute. Swinging through the administration office, Rani and Declan took a look through the list of faculty and staff. Rani found Dr. Diabrix Elderfound, the current chair of the Engineering department with an interest in a variety of topics, including recent history and advancements in transportation services. Declan noticed two familiar names (both Ironbound), but was immediately drawn to the vaguely familiar purple hat: Dr. Adamant Flintlock. The warforged is a professor in the Arcano-Mechanics department and his primary research interest is on medical and physical augmentation. WAIT. We should go talk to him. Read that: PHYSICAL AUGMENTATION.
The Deep End managed to catch Dr. Flintlock at the tail end of his office hours. Despite immediately recognizing them as not students, he allowed them to enter his office. Are you aware that someone might be stealing your work? Hm? The group shows the creature – note the physical augmentation. Dr. Flintlock is a bit perplexed. Oh no, I don't go about adding arms to people. No – he rolls up his sleeves – you see you flesh folk have a nasty habit of dying really early, but I have lived with centuries! My work focuses on giving you flesh folk a little bit of my mechanical enhancements. For example, I've found that older folk have issues of the heart (ah, you sir may want to start getting checked for that) and I have devised a mechanical heart to assist with that.
What is involved with that process? Well you would need ample space for operation, the proper tools (medical and tinkering), and perhaps a sedative – highly unpleasant to be awake when I make the incision. Have you done anything else related? Dr. Flintlock discussed that his priority as been on his heart, but his students often remind him that he should have pursued that full body suit he had once designed. Ah the full-body suit- THE WHAT NOW? What full-body suit? Rani offers her blood to Ghilani so that they could show Olivantha's mech suit. Dr. Flintlock vaguely recognizes the design and compares it to his own... it's not the same, but similar. You say they used this for combat? Preposterous! This was a medical device – primarily for monitoring and assistance to the elderly.
Rani asked if anyone could have possibly acquired the designs. Dr. Flintlock mentioned that he presented this topic at the Tudas Expo about 3 decades ago, but ultimately shifted his research gears, so to speak. He found the abstract list. Rani and Declan looked it over and noted that, while they didn't recognize the names of the other presenters, they did notice the funding: IronForge and all the Overlords of Ah'Shal. Dr. Flintlock, as he ushered them out of his office, mentioned that he would very much like if they would inform him if they find whoever may have commandeered his ideas. He'd like to sue for academic theft! Good day!
After finding a designated magic zone and healing a bit, Ghilani teleports the group out of the City of Order and back to Six's tree.

In the Days of Family Therapy

Arriving at Six's, the Deep End made themselves at home with Declan looking for the steak that Six had requested. Newt sent to his dad inquiring about what the heck those two fiends were doing with a laser horse. Atu responded: "That was you! HA! I made that permanent." Every now and then, little rifts open up allowing some of his people to move through. Atu was unable to fully finish his explanation. Rani confirmed that Nadia was with Ilya and that Circe was still in Ezust'Hold. Identify suggested that Rani's map and the map case appear to be interacting in some fashion, though the map is significantly more magical than its case. It seems the map itself might also be a key?
After Rani had asked the map about Stefanus and had it ping just outside the House of the Desert, Moira tried to scry on Corvinus' son. She found that her scry was blocked by a cold and vaguely familiar force. As she tried to perceive anything past it, she could just make out the faintest sound of a ticking clock. Hey guys, I think the Lady of Dread is in the Heart of the Desert and is warding Divination. Moira then tried scrying on Zephus. She was able to see the young air genasi – now donning clothes that obscured his scales and a hood over his head – approaching one of the gates of the city. Once he passed the Gate, though, he was blocked like before.
Rani, a bit concerned that her family wouldn't stay outside of the city if they didn't remember her, had Moira send to Mirza. The Grandmother responded that, don't worry. There's a wedding coming up and PERHAPS there will be a festival right after that. A mandatory one. Otherwise, nothing suspicious that she has made note of. Moira also sent to Denarya. Check out some suspicious masked man; we think your son might be in the Heart of the Desert. After being chastised for not warning her about the danger, she sent again. This time, she included the divination ward on the city and the general danger of people in masks. Ghilani spends some time starting to design a spell.
Rani quickly updated Six on how names may not cause pain and if someone tries to invade my dreams... just let that happen. Sure! The parents then went to speak to Mario. What do you remember? Mario remembers waking up in an alleyway. He recalls being anxious and terrified and fleeing the city shortly after he was accused of the crime he knows he didn't commit... or at least, as far as he knows. After being further pushed, prodded, and told to strip (don't worry, I'm not attracted to you at all), Mario began to get aggravated, commenting that he was getting the biggest headache. Look, if I had any more, do you THINK I wouldn't tell you? I don't have them. It's GONE, okay? Despite not recalling much beside being knocked out, the scar on Mario's back indicates that he certainly was attacked by something with particularly large claws. After updating Mario on Olivantha, the two parents left.
In the morning, Ghilani wakes up feeling... heavy. While working on his spell, he experienced a sudden flash of paint. Moira checked him over and found that nothing seemed to be wrong. Moira also offers to assist with the spell thing, if she's able. Going to check in on Six, the group finds the tabaxi blood witch a bit more solemn and snippier than usual. You may leave Ghilani here, but the rest of you may leave. We will mourn the loss of Mama Ten today. When? Soon. Ghilani moves his supplies and book into Six's room and begins to work while waiting. A little while later, Ghilani watches as Mama Ten dies, feeling a sudden build up of immense pressure in his veins before the pressure alleviates and he feels normal again. Ghilani immediately apologized: I screwed up didn't I? Six was quick to assure him that no, you did not. Mama Ten lived a long and fulfilling life. She fought in wars and, while distant, she was respected and loved by her people. Now, she may finally rest. It is not your fault.
Meanwhile, Moira casts Legend Lore on the "Eternal Oracle" and receives the sensation of something cold and a pull on her being, along with the following words:
Descended of two gods, Beloved of one, Despised by one, fueled by hunger and by blood.

With everyone gathered the great start to the day, Rani asks if they should all have a family talk. The rest of the group agreed, finding a space within Six's abode to talk. Look, we all need to be on the same page here before we go into this fight. The initially civil conversation immediately spiraled out of control as Newt and Declan both began yelling at one another. Newt called Declan a coward for his reaction to the whole situation and Declan turned around and argued that Newt doesn't seem to comprehend the seriousness of what is going on. You've been hunting this for what, three days? Since your dad? I've been hunting this thing for a YEAR. Newt responds that he HAS been helping Declan with this. Declan raises a brow. I don't think you understand what is at stake here. Moira attempted to calm everyone down. This clearly isn't helping. I think both of you need to try and see from the other's perspective.
After taking a breath, Newt says look. The woman I love and want to marry is being held by a literal DEVIL. Pardon my desire to see this through. But why DID you want to stay behind alone? Why would you want to rush in? There is a bit of backpedalling: No, I didn't want to rush in, but look, love makes you do stupid things sometimes, okay. I agree, we should gather our resources, make sure we are thinking, and go in prepared to deal with whatever we find in there. Newt has every intention of finding Lollith and dragging her out. Rani plans otherwise: I will kill Lollith if I see her. Fine. I won't stop you, but if you can... let me take her out. Otherwise, Rani plans to be merciful on the underlings, but she plans to kill creatures, Lollith, and the Doctor on sight.
Is there anything else? We seem to be on the same page. Declan mentioned a point of curiosity. What did you mean by a weapon? Weren't we passed this? I understand the fiend part... but why do you need to kill divines? Newt argued that he needs to be prepared to deal with his father and whatever is beyond the Barrier. Beyond the Barrier? Why do you have DIVINES there Newt? Who is your target? Declan understands his dad, but divines? Are you really willing to put the entire pantheon at risk. Newt assured Declan that this is just a failsafe. No, I don't think you understand. That weapon might be fine with you... but what happens when you die? What happens if its taken? If you have a specific target, then I will help you. Newt sighed. I can't tell you. Declan, frustrated, throws his hands up. So when were you going to tell us? If Nacheevi hadn't asked, would you have told us? That you were planning on putting the person I love at risk? Newt said that when he knew it was possible he would have told them. Having reached his end, Declan left.
After a moment of silence, Rani hesitantly began to speak. Look, I want you all to know that... well, I've been sending these messages – my story – to my family. When I run out of those and if my family does not remember me, I am struggling to see a future for me. I always envisioned having my family and building a family of my own. Rani has every intention of fighting until the end; she WILL make it to the end. However, if something happens and you have to leave her body, promise me that you will let me rest and bring my swords back to my people. They NEED to return to my family.
The entire group moves to reassure Rani. We will NOT let that happen. Plus, you still have Ezra and Zephus, right? Rani emphasizes again that she's not actively seeking her death, but she's come to terms with the fact that what she saw as a future has been entirely taken from her. And she's not sure what her future holds without them. Moira assures Rani that she will do everything in her power to ensure that Rani and everyone makes it out. They've walked out of every other encounter thus far. They'll make sure this happens again. Rani forced all of them to promise that they will return her swords. Yes, and with your corpse if needed.
Rani then turned to Newt. Look, I've learned to compartmentalize. I learned I needed to. You might need to do the same. And I wish you all would have shown the same compassion to Declan that you just showed to me. With that, a few hugs were exchanged before Rani left to follow and find Declan.
A voice that had been absent briefly returned to Ghilani's mind. How are you dear? Ghilani explained that everything is bad and the family is fighting. Oh dear, I am so sorry, but do not ever doubt yourself. I made you and you are exactly as I designed. I carefully stitched every thread. Hold yourself with confident my dear. Ghilani agrees. Now, do you still plan on seeing Tel'Rhea? Good, go with confidence... and discern if you feel someone as she is fitting to govern the realm of Life. You are worth everything, my dear. At the same time, Moira's little buddy pipes up. You said you would do anything for your friends, does that extend to me? You know, I wasn't really sure I stood by my decision to help you, but NOW I do. Annanias expressed a desire to do what he could to support Moira. He is perfectly integrated with her soul now, after all.
Kicking down the door, Six mentioned that the potion is finished. Oh, where is everyone?
Rani catches up to Declan and fills him in on everything she'd told the others after he left. Where were you going, by the way? Declan said that he was heading home... the first home... he's not really sure why. Probably better to turn around. Rani then offers that oh so famous offer: Wanna touch swords again? Holding Suarksha and Vinaash, Rani then prays to Soyolmaa. Hey, can you let us know what happened? Why did you guys get into a fight? Any advice would be helpful? Suraksha then piped up: a fight? With who? Rani responded Dysis. Oh no, no, no, they didn't fight, right Vinaash? The brooding swords respond affirmatively. Rani then squints. But the play seemed to indicate otherwise? No, she did what she was told to do.
And then a wave of warmth travelled up from Suraksha and a wave of cold from Vinaash as Rani blinked out, leaving Declan slightly panicked. What did I do? I only touched your swords! Rani saw a set of blurry, unfamiliar steps. Climbing upwards, there were muddled noises all around: yelling? explosions? Something else. There is a sense of urgency as you feel yourself push through a set of doors. She told you to do this. You had to do this. And Rani snapped back. Holy crap, I think I'm right! I think I'm seeing flashes from Soyolmaa! The swords seem silent now.
Newt then arrived having tracked both Rani and Declan. Is there a secure place we can talk? There are things we don't need people to overhear. Declan responds that people always seem to be overhearing them. What does it matter? Is Six's orchard not sufficient? Newt emphasized that he wants to tell Declan... but there are certain people he can't have overhearing. Maybe a god's domain? Declan said he could ask Thera, but he hasn't had a dream in a few nights.
With the potion now ready, Moira schedules a meeting time with the Queen for the following morning and everyone settles down to rest. Declan arrives on the familiar golden platform. Still fighting? Yes. You couldn't respond to my question earlier about bringing Newt? Oh... well~ I was busy... with very, very important god things! Really? Yes, of course! But do you really wish to have a conversation? Very well. Newt finds himself upon a golden platform. Newt explained that he wants the weapon to potentially kill Primus. The moment they arrived to speak with them he didn't trust Primus or their intentions. He'd like to have that insurance policy in his back pocket and couldn't risk saying that in front of Ghilani or anyone who could tip Primus off.
Declan blinks. A weapon to kill Primus? Why do you need a weapon? Do you know what that would mean. Look, if you kill Primus and I die... I will never be reincarnated again. So? I won't be either. Declan takes a moment to process while Therarask, who had been vibing, suddenly seemed way more focused. I'm sorry, you want to kill the being that was my friend and I am considering re-establishing a friendship with? Why become a blood sworn? Seem's wildly backwards. Let me make this very, very clear. If you kill my Beloved or indirectly result in his death, I will find a means to get a hold of your soul and rip it apart piece by piece before you are taking into the Sea of Red. Newt responds: cool, unhelpful and then ignores the god who's currently hosting. Therarask fumes.
Declan continued, asserting that there were other ways. You are putting my mother at risk. Newt stands by his decision. Declan sighed. Look, when shit hit the fan, I stayed my hand and sought to do everything else beside killing Volo. Good on you, Newt responds, unfazed. Declan continued: have you considered an alternative that doesn't involve a gun? Look, this is how I protect people: by shooting other people. Declan is a bit confused by that sentiment. And Therarask very much agrees. Look, I might not be the most intelligent of gods... but are you even certain you want to go the murder route? The one time I spoke to your little elven friend, he didn't seem to... fully grasp what I was telling him. Perhaps things are being misinterpreted? Plus, who is going to build this for you? There are very few who could... Newt says he's working on that and has some ideas. Therarask sighs. Didn't a Goddess already give you a task? Oh well, I suppose.

Into the Temple of the Goddess of Life

With the potion ready, Ghilani – upon no longer trancing – asked if he should go pick up Tolvaj. Ghilani gestured: Do we think there's any hope of salvaging this for me? Like is my "already fucked" level down here or... WAY up here? After some discussion and recalling the conversation with Nacheevi, the group ultimately decided that at the very least, Tolvaj will help protect Ghilani. Thus, Ghilani goes and grabs the antagonist.
Entering the courtyard to the House of Life, Ghilani turned invisible and lingered near the group. As the Queen arrived, she motioned for them to pray with her at one of the more secluded statues, leaving her guards a little ways away. Rani, very much picked up on what was going on and mentioned that they have brought her the requested item to "help her pray". After drinking Six's potion, there was a moment of silence as the Queen's face scrunched... and she very much seemed immediately different... she now seems visibly pregnant, though not overly so. Thank you. Declan chimes in: I'll pass that along to Six.
In Ghilani's mind, Tolvaj laughed a bit. She could have been much further along, it supposed... who knows which husband this one belongs to. Ghilani pressed if Tolvaj actually knew who? It said no... but to the Queen, it might matter a bit. Oh well! Congrats to her on the pregnancy! Meanwhile, Rani helped the Queen to her feet. Eleté addressed the people in the Courtyard. These heroes have done much for our continent; I shall grant them access to our House of Life. With that, Ghilani began to sneak after the group... and felt himself lifted over a branch he would have stepped on. HUH.
Newt and Declan eventually pinpointed Ghilani and herded him into the middle of the group. What... what was that Newt's wing just bumped against? That... wasn't Ghilani... but they arrived at the center of the House of Life. Leaving her guards, the Queen led them to the back of a massive tree as the bark parted to create a doorway. Declan said "Ladies first" and the Queen responded, matter-of-factly: "Correct".
Entering within, the bark closed behind as the stairs downward opened. Moira decided fuck it, let me see what's happening here and casted See Invisibility. Ghilani now seems to have... 8 additional appendages that are very much acting like training wheels. They remain mostly folded up near Ghilani's rib cage, but otherwise... move and extend quickly to stabilize or course correct the blood mage. Moira's not sure seeing that was worth it.
The spiral stairs wind further and further downward through winding roots that eventually disperse, depositing the group right in front of a large wooden archway. Beyond, the group found a massive room flooded with teal-blue water with multiple statues of animal and humanoid figures rising from its depths. Five boats were conveniently arranged around the platform extended out a little ways over the water. After some brief discussion, all five decide to squeeze into one boat. Despite not possessing any oars, the boats begin to move of their own accord, drifting lazily through the rising statues. After a few minutes of the leisurely boat ride, there is a pulse of sudden light and then everyone feels a presence beside them.
Images of mothers – with varying degrees of harsh words – appear to each. Moira finds herself unable to answer. How can she answer? Newt mentally recalls that... well actually, Lavathi is the lowest on the list so her children ARE actually above her. Rani responds that she will come home – she will do everything in her power. And then Ghilani sees the image of his "mother" appear, an unfamiliar and cold expression on her face.
I was never your mother. I always wanted a son... but instead I was stuck with you. Not a blessing... no, a curse. You brought this upon me, Ghilani. You are the reason I am dead.
As the image finishes speaking, a line of crimson red appears along her throat, dripping down her body. A pressure builds in everyone's mind and while Ghilani (with the help of Tolvaj), Rani, and Moira are able to shake off the effects, Declan and Newt feel a flash of pain cut through their minds. It almost seemed to emanate... from Ghilani? There isn't much time to ponder that as the boat continues right over a water fall. Enveloped briefly by cool water, the Deep End then found themselves standing amidst a grove of trees adorned in an assortment of flowers. Elegant wooden bridges with railings covered in garlands stretched between small grassy covered islands. And at the far end, there stood a gazebo with pillars composed of tree trunks with roots wrapping around beige-white stones.
Entering the gazebo, the stones at the center have been peeled away to reveal a patch of dirt. In that dirt, the smallest of seedlings rests, nothing more than a spindly stem and a few awkwardly large leaves. Glancing around, there appeared to be 6 carvings on 6 of the 12 pillars. Each carving was a symbol of Tel'Rhea with words carved underneath. Four of the words appeared to not be glowing: Birth, Renewal, Family, and Mothers. The other two, however, were faintly glowing: Growth and Fertility. Ghilani touched the carvings and nothing seemed to happen. Well wait, it was GHILANI. Someone other than Ghilani did the same... and nothing happened once more. Ghilani then approached the little seedling with the intent to give it some water... and a voice rang out.
Upon fertile grounds I might grow a canopy to reach Tel'Rhea's heart. But alone I might suffer, from blight and the cutter's axe. Yet if you stand and watch too close, the sun will never reach me.
When the voice finished speaking, the light on the small plant seemed to pulse, warmth spreading throughout the gazebo. The plant seemed to spread its leaves, reaching upward... did it just grow and inch? Wait, it grew again. Then there was a sudden silence, followed by the sound of something being ripped from the ground nearby.

The Death of Mama Ten

Six pauses in her work on the potion to arrange a spread of candles around her book. Returning to her book, she allows a drop of her blood to spill upon the pages, bringing the odd, unfamiliar arcane runes to life. A split in space above the book forms and Six quickly shoves the book aside and climbs up. As the rift widens and opens, it first reveals the blurry image of a forest... and then a cabin... and then a very old, withered, and wrinkled shifter woman sitting in a rocking chair. Her hair has become wispy, the thinnest of silver strands. Her face heavily wrinkled and sagging. Her hands have become splotched and nearly bony as they rest on the arm rests of her chair.

Through the rift, others open: Diviner Two, Auntie Four & Bella Five, Matron Seven, Mistress Eight... and a small aarakocra figure, dressed in robes and adorned in sun regalia and feathers. A final rift opens to reveal the briefest flash of a frown on Lux's face before they escort Primus forward. The form of Primus is soon engulfed by blood, taking on a different silhouette... one vaguely reminiscent of a tall, towering figure with pointed, tufted ears, made of blood. It is hard to make out the exact features, but Mama Ten's eyes light up with recognition. She smiles, sheds a tear, and weakly lifts and arm. The figure of blood kneels before the old woman and embraces her. When the figure of blood pulls away... the rocking chair is empty... and all of the rifts soon close.

The Temple of Life

There are borders and boundaries for a REASON. Are you out of your depth? Were you not happy with us in the Desert? With traversing the Dune Sea? Will you... will you EVER return home?

You never stopped. You would have been the death of your brother and sister. I don't regret abandoning you. Whatever you harbor is a vile, evil thing... it could only ever be drawn to something that is just as vile and evil... or at least something with that potential.

Your continued existence puts my name, my family, my career... my children at risk. Regardless of how you feel about me and my choices, are you truly so  cold-hearted to note care about both of them? They're the children I wanted.

Are you happy now? Do you think you're different than me? Better than me? Did you not just fall victim to the same circumstances as I? You only ever wanted to attack the visible target... never help the victim.
