General Summary

Pondering Like Cats

Ghilani remains in a rage. The blood mage is frustrated that the attendant doesn't seem to know anything and is convinced that he's going to drain every painting of blood... as he stands amidst a massive, three story Temple filled to the brim with art. Newt is shocked – he's not sure he's ever seen Ghilani angry before. Although he's happy to help Ghilani personally drain every INCH of this place with blood (there wasn't a SIGN that said you couldn't after all), maybe they should do that when its not so crowded. Ghilani takes a breath and agrees, but this is pretty fucked up.
Rani takes a moment to meditate, attempting to find the center of balance within herself, as the Grandmothers suggested. Around her, the swarms of bees and locusts dance in perfect harmony. Feeling grounded, the feeling of grass beneath her suddenly... fades and when she places her hands on the ground, her left feels red rock beneath her palm, while her right hand sinks into desert sand. But when her eyes open, the grass is still around her.
Meanwhile, Declan let's Rani know that he's going to leave Moira and take a walk. Strolling through the streets of Lark'Hal as he tries to collect his thoughts, he finds that he is plagued by cats. He hears a rumor about someone named KAT-reus and then finds himself at a gazebo adorned with 8 massive sandstone cat statues painted in vibrant colors. Finding himself upon a Sphinz, he continues to think, but also takes note of the large amount of graffiti and art that has covered the surface. Nearby, a student gives a dramatic monologue about cats. Declan accepts that his fate is cats.
Newt and Ghilani find some of Rani's locusts outside an ornate door on the third story of the Temple. Newt corners one of the insects and demands to know where Rani is. The door attendants look at the interaction very confused. Do you... need something? The attendants do seem to know where Rani is and mention that she went inside not too long ago. As they open the doors for the duo, from Ghilani's shoulder, drone 595 buzzes. He could have helped.
Descending into the Temple's inner grotto, the duo found Rani meditating and were approached by three golden wreathed women. They attempted to speak to both of them. Ghilani, at first, understood them and the three women immediately closed in and surrounded Ghilani, relief and happiness on their faces, but the words quickly faded from their lips... Ghilani then asked them to speak up. One of them, now frustrated, fixed Ghilani with a glare and for the briefest of moments... Ghilani felt his joints lock up before the feeling faded.
Still, the women attempted to "speak up" as requested and through a joint effort between the trio, they were able to decipher and put together the Laurels request. They are the daughters of Lark and a woman named Akeldama, the Scorned Gorgon Queen. They are bound by her unfinished curse and their mother is still is as well, buried beneath the Sea of Moving Art. If you can lift the curse, they would be grateful. If it is for your mother, Rani is more than happy to do what she can do to help.
The women then offered golden vials of sap to the other two and Rani immediately told them not to drink it right away. Inquiring about getting more, the Laurels agreed to grant each of them one more vial upon freeing their mother and lifting the curse, though they know not how to do it. Ghilani then inquired about the Muses' Paint. The women have sensed something peculiar, but were unaware of such a travesty. They do not leave this room often. As the trio left, the Laurels returned to their seats at the base of the sprawling tree.
Meeting up with Declan, the Deep End made their way back to Rani's home to prep for the interview. Rani purposefully had the swarm buzz a little louder than normal as Ghilani and Newt began to talk about draining all of the blood from every painting in the Temple of Lark again. Newt proposes that MAYBE Savant Three wants to give her blood! What if she's willingly donating it? Declan is taken aback by the positivity from Newt. Declan then suggests attempting to communicate with the other blood witches. If you are connected to Primus, perhaps you can ask Six. She was close with Three.
Safely tucked in Rani's house, the Deep End continue discussing the matter of bloody paint. First, we don't even know where Savant 3 is. And plus, the royal genasi families are powerful people. Ghilani then sends to Six and asks when was the last you heard from Savant 3? Is she the type of person to give her blood as paint? Oh, it's been like 1000 years. She was always dedicated to the arts! Declan breathes a sigh of relief that Six didn't seem angry. Newt is now convinced that his positive approach may actually have some traction!
Ghilani is unconvinced, however, and uses the blood from 3 to try and contact her. There's a difficulty in establishing a connection, but Ghilani feels something tentative take hold. Do you want another blood witch to find and help you? The response is only one word, but filled with anger, a desire for violence and vengeance: YES. Yeah, no Newt, she's not there of her own volition. At least not anymore.
Newt proposes potentially sneaking into the Genasi estates by going invisible and then taking the form of a sand seal if the invisibility falls, but he feels Ghilani will need to be there to talk to Savant 3 in order to avert violence. Maybe if he was an actual bloodhunter... Newt and Declan both openly state that perhaps they should detour to Therarask to become formal bloodhunters. Primus is pleased to here of such news. Declan has had a change of heart? How intriguing. Of course, Six would have to be convinced to return to Therarask. Primus will have Lux get everything ready.
Ultimately, they can't and shouldn't rush into this matter hastily. There's the chance that once they go to rescue 3 and, by extension, openly undermine whichever genasi family is involved, that they may never be able to come back. And this is Rani's home. Even if Ghilani says he would take all of the blame, Rani would certainly have to share it by pure association. Plus, let's deal with this probably going to be a terrible interview first.
Hamida and Timur arrive with bags of food followed by Tatya and Lakshmi. Tatya strolls up, looking a bit better dressed. Newt asks if THAT'S what Tatya is wearing. That's the best he's got? Tatya responds in turn. Declan mentions that if Newt needs clothes designed you could always ask Therarask, they did want to see you after all and seemed hurt that Newt wasn't on Therarask. Newt calls horse shit on that.

Welcome Back to Mass Suggestion

A human woman in a pristine red vest brings The Deep End into a small lounge, but quickly leads them upstairs to a relatively small studio bathed in red light. Seated behind a desk near a metallic box and the familiar mounted and moveable microphone is Cahareth himself. Rani takes note of his appearance and mannerisms. With and without the microphone, he tends to gesture frequently with his right hand. His frame appears to be lean and thin, despite the padded asymmetric suit. There's not an inch of skin that shows on him for that matter.
After clarifying last names and explaining the general planned layout of the recorded interview, Cahareth flips a few switches and presses a set of buttons before a red light appears with plain text printed: "RECORDING".
Good evening and welcome back to Mass Suggestion. For the sand-stumbling newbies joining us for the very first time, I am THE Cahareth, your guide to all the new political, historical, battle-crazed and sports-fueled events of the world. And as always, if I may make a suggestion to the masses... You're going to want to grab your swimming gear because – that's right, folks – we're jumping straight into the Deep End.   The sword-dancing queen with a desert heart – even if covered by an odd swarming of insects: Rani Al'Himma.   The flying blue devil who I can now say certainly smells exactly as the rumors suggest: Newt – apologies, Lord Newt Von'Della.   The group's token "old" man with a tendency to put his foot in his mouth – and so I'm greatly looking forward to this interview: Declan Rawlings, aka... The Widow.   Country bumpkin turned upstanding devout and weaver of fate with an insatiable desire for... birds: Moira Caliban.   The still standing glass-cannon with a penchant for things that bleed and flower – two ends of a new spectrum there: Ghilani Avhenan.
With the interview underway and everyone settled in, Cahareth set about asking The Deep End a few questions. First of all, how would you describe the group dynamic? Who's the leader? After a moment of pause, everyone unanimously stated that Rani was clearly the leader. Oh, do you all blindly follower her leadership then? Rani eloquently explains that its mutual input and, although we all have physical abilities, its – as you said – our diverse backgrounds that allow us to tackle the challenges we face on behalf of the continent as a whole. How well spoken!
In light of the release of the Three Floating Tits, was there any romantic tension between any of you? Everyone very quickly says, loudly NO. Cahareth turns then to Ghilani: so there's no truth to what was portrayed in the play?? Ghilani then decides to settle this. Newt, do you have any romantic feelings for me? No. Well, there you have it, Cahareth. And there you have it folks! Well then, any paramours we should know about? Newt mentioned that he's seeing an acolyte and soon to be priestess in Ah'Shal and... that's all he'll say. Keeping it under wraps, I see.
Taking a turn to the more action-oriented, Cahareth then asked: At what point did you feel you could truly trust one another? Or perhaps there is someone you still don't trust? Newt declares that he trusts everyone in this room... except Cahareth (fair enough!). The group unanimously decides that it was Varoona where everything was cemented. Man, Varoona was great, wasn't it?
On the same vein, any moment where you asked yourself, "What am I doing?" Felt an insurmountable level of fear? Or, dare I say, felt out of your depth? There's been moments, but it was never necessary for themselves. They're more concerned for loved ones and how they might be affected by the actions taken. Ghilani, however, piped up and said that he almost always feels out of his depth, but everyone is always quick to remind him that he can do this. How wholesome!
Has another place on this continent stolen your heart? Or do you still feel the nagging call to home? Newt feels he'll always return to Ah'Shal. Ghilani would like to go back to the flowers of Tel'Rhea. There's something about a volcano for Declan and Rani will always feel the pull to the desert. But MAN VAROONA. The Deep End collectively loves Varoona (though it's more of a vacation home only spot for Rani). Man, can't wait to see the Blue End Galleon rebuilt! The NEED for a fish bowl is REAL.
What do you think of our High Dremoran Council? Rani answers quite diplomatically. They're politicians and it takes a specific kind of person to balance one's regional affairs and those of the entire continent – some certainly do better than others. But all in all, we really thought it would be a headache to deal with the Council, but we've only had one or two! After some rapid fire questions, Cahareth transitioned to the individual portion of the interview.
Now, a few questions for our resident queen and somewhat recent shopper at Caliban's Secrets, Rani:
Where did the swarms come from? Rani succinctly informed Cahareth that she was working with the brilliant Marcella Dunebrook and had travelled into the Wasteland. She found the swarms there and they seemed to take a liking to her. They also seem to have a strange intelligence. Perhaps because of the mist? Not to be divisive, but do you have a favorite between the swarms? Rani felt the sensations of thousands of eyes upon her. She, of course, values both of her swarms. When asked further about her research and whether or not she had found anything else, Rani pulled the NDA card – can't step on the toes of academic protocol!
How has it been being away from the Dune Sea for so long? Rani admitted that the Heart of the Desert will always be her home and where her family is, but she has found a second family for herself amidst her traveling companions. Well now, is there anything – in all honesty, heart to heart – that you regret, Rani? She responded that – in the moment – she regrets a lot, but everything that has happened and everything she has chosen to do have led her to this moment, here and now (though not necessarily this interview), and she doesn't regret that. How eloquently and vaguely put.
To the blue furred fellow who once pulled a bedazzled sword out of his pants, Newt:
Care to expand on your thoughts when you abandoned the group? A tactical 4-1 split? Now that's something I've not seen in my sports or battle analyses! Very well, now how about your noble title? How DID you acquire that? Oh, well, it was a mutual thing. I had gotten close (ooooh?) with her son Callon. I hadn't met anyone with wings like mine, you know? And he knew his heritage, but I didn't know mine. Hot new topic, Newt's heritage might be of particular interest... stay tuned.
Anything you'd like to say to the Black Dragon Clan and Tetsuya since you're safe on the other side of the continent? No, he knows how I feel, Oh, and how DO you feel – for my lovely listeners? The topic of slavery was mentioned and a record scratch sounded. Is this a formal accusation against the Black Dragon Clan? Well then, you heard it here first folks: The Deep End sends accusations against one of the powerful families of Caliban!
And how was it going back to Ah'Shal? That cesspit? Oh well you know, the people and the Ah'Shazza might be down, but their doing some hard, important work and they're definitely on the up and up. Any contention with your paramour over you being a bounty hunter? Well, I haven't taken a bounty since Varoona. Now that folks, is what we might call growth.

On to the man who certainly looks like he's aged just sitting here, Declan:
Why did you go by "The Widow"? Declan dodges the question. Oh, you know... when you're drunk you just come up with the DARNDEST things. What made you drop the alcohol by the way? Was it a love for fashion, given your early proclivity for shoes? Yeah, definitely... I got really invested in keeping up with fashion and... tiger stripes. Should we be expecting any more fashion changes given the dramatic change you've already undergone? I think this one really represents me. And WHO are you? A devoted man.
Now, I'm not particularly religious... but what gives you any right or authority on such matters? Tearing down religious statues? Debating High Priests & Priestesses? You know, again, me and alcohol did some bad things. I'm working on it and doing better. With a man who seems to have some nods to Therarask, how was your visit to Pleasure Row? Oh, you know, I got in touch with a... friend. Oh and the tattoo?? UMMMMM... well, the theater was GREAT. You know, the play. Ah yes, Three Floating Tits, any truth to that relationship? Declan finally states that yeah... the friend is more than a friend and its Thera.

And finally, the member who has evoked the greatest amount of gender envy, Ghilani:
Right out of the gate: Are you a vampire? What's the deal with the blood drinking? Ghilani checks in with Primus. Should I say I'm a blood witch? That's up to you dear. Ghilani – after being reminded of what the question even was – explains that he does blood magic. Sorry to disappoint folks, he's not a vampire! Now, if I'm not mistaken, you've met a handful of blood witches in your travels. Ghilani, knowing where this question is going, exclaims "NOOOOOO, I can't choose". Who would you say is your favorite? After some prodding and rephrasing of the question, Ghilani mentions Four and Five and that Eight gave him a plushie! You heard it here first folks: 4, 5, and 8. Cahareth transitioned to a... darker topic. How do you feel being in the Heart of the Desert?
And this is where the adults realized that they should have been worried about Ghilani in this interview. Can I ask you a question Cahareth? Certainly! Ghilani asks Cahareth if he knows about the Muses' Paint. Did you know there's blood in it? The Royal Genasi families are draining some poor woman of her blood to make paint. Oh? Slinging out accusations at the royal families! Ghilani seems resolved in his stance, but in the background, Rani absolutely fails to maintain any semblance of a poker face.
Turning the sand seal here, is there still something there with the previous head of the Gold Dragon Clan? Well, you see, I died (starting out riveting here folks!). I was murdered and killed by the Black Dragon Clan and the Gold brought me back, but after that Parvathian just needed some time to get himself together. Are there any lingering feelings there? Ghilani admits that yeah, maybe a little. Well then, Parvathian, if you're listening, consider this a confession! Anything you'd like to say to those in Tel'Rhea? Ghilani – a wholesome bean – hopes that they're having a good time, the winter gardens are great there.
Rani mouths to newt: "Welcome to the adult table". Nooooooooooo!
Well, there you have it! My final suggestion to you, my ever loyal comrades and new inductees... perhaps it's time we all take a dive off the Deep End!
Cahareth thanked The Deep End for their time. He has plenty of content with that interview and, per request, will air it in 5 days time. Newt mentioned that Bert was such a bad choice to ask about them – there are so many better people you could have interviewed! Cahareth mentioned that he would gladly accept recommendations for future interviews to follow up. The group provided an arrangement of names: Arabellum, Cali, Ismera, Cpt. Faumea, High Lord Ironborn, Mary, Four and Five, Six, Dr. Cyrus Underbrink, Azrail, Lady Crossbones, and Volo.
As Tatya boldly strolled up into the studio, Newt attempted to trip him, but Tatya only stumbled slightly before eyeing Newt: "Do better". Tatya strode in confidently and pitched his sport to Cahareth who seemed... almost immediately receptive. Tatya proposed getting Cesar on the show and convincing him to try it out, but – to add icing to the cake – Tatya also gladly volunteered Rani to demo the sport alongside himself! Cahareth is intrigued enough by the proposal and promised to reach out to Tatya with a time in the near future.
Heading out, Tatya is incredibly confident that he'll beat Rani, who is equally confident and mentioned that Tatya better win given that he's had some practice (and therefore an advantage). It would look quite bad if he lost. Declan declares he'd gladly bet on Rani because she could kick his ass. Tatya explains that his family is way up here and everyone else is down here. No one believes in Tatya, it seems.

A Family Dinner

As the Deep End leaves... why did you have to be SO honest, Ghilani? I thought we were being honest!? Conversation fades as the Deep End returns to Rani's home with Lakshmi setting up the table with a spread of food. Timur and Hamida invite everyone to gather round and enjoy. Rani is quick to notice that her mother has "that face" that indicates she has serious matters to speak about, but is going to try and avoid doing so for the good of this family meal. Timur is quite happy to talk about the interview. How did it go?? The interview went surprisingly well... until... until what? Well, until there was... too much honest, shall we say? You all might need to be on the lookout for the royal families?
Hamida eventually sighs. Perhaps we need to have a forthcoming discussion then. I've already told your Baba, but we need to have a discussion as a family. Is someone threatening you Rani? Tatya is quick to say he'll stab them. Rani informed her family about the dangers from white masked figures and about a lady who likes clock and tea... and about some people with four arms. Tatya is no longer certain he can stab all of the threats, but he is confident that he'll be able to guard against threat. LIMA, after all, is not without guard and resources and he's navigated cut throat people before. Lakshmi mentioned that if forewarning is of interest, she can perhaps fashion a tattoo – one to warn the other if another is in danger?
Oh, also, to make matters worse... that interview? Might be a good idea to lay low. The Royal Genasi families might not be happy with us. Hamida decides that everyone will be traveling to the Bhediya in five days time. Tell Prof. Dunebrook that it is urgent that you take a family trip. Rani offers to explain the situation to Dunebrook.
What did you do to anger the Royal Genasi families? Ghilani explains that there's blood in the Muses' paint and the Royal Genasi families are behind it. Timur seems almost painfully confused. Tatys seems shocked and then his face pales. Are you sure? Is that a joke? Please tell me it's a joke? Ghilani responds that he wishes it was a joke, causing Tatya to groan. The Muses' paint isn't the ONLY product of that line... they also put something similar into chocolate truffles on campus. They help students, give them a kick of motivation so to speak. Oh by The One, he's eaten blood. Tatya puts his head down in a basket that Declan acquired. Newt continues to hammer back shots. However, Tatya also mentioned that there is SOME information on blood witches that he saw in the library. Rani mentioned perhaps reading them now... and then back pedaled. Maybe not the best time to be poking around there.
Ghilani is confident then if he could just SHOW the people they would believe him, but Tatya is quick to rebuke that. If I tried hard enough, I could cover up whatever you tried to prove. Timur nods. The Royal Genasi families are powerful with wealth behind them and a populace that generally adores them. Rani comments that they don't even need to prove that Ghilani is lying... only make the people doubt long enough for them to ensure its completely covered up once more.
Rani quickly asked Zephus if he knew anything about the Muses' paint. Zephus has never used it. And if you're leaving the city, be careful. There's raiders roaming about. Timur redirected everyone away from the deeper conversation back towards a lighthearted meal. We can worry about this all tomorrow morning.
There's then a knock on the door and Rani immediately offers to get it, finding a trail of petals and seashells. Timur seems particularly excited, elbowing Hamida once Rani leaves as if he might know something. Newt passes out at the table shortly thereafter. Rani finds Ezra waiting for her and signals a quartet to start playing. How about a dance? That is how we met after all, a dance near the shell laden beaches of Varoona. Rani wouldn't want to dance with anyone else. How that makes Ezra's heart soar. As they dance, Ezra informs her that there are white masks here, but they seem inactive... they simply lurk. Regarding Zephus, Ezra mentioned that he's with the Curators in the Sea of Moving Art. When Rani mentioned the blood situation in the Muses' paint and the potential association with the Royal Genasi families, Ezra did mention that he is conveniently a fire genasi and a changeling... if he can find someone high enough to impersonate... he could potentially get in and poke around. When their dance finished, they walked arm and arm to find a place to stay. It's been a while.
With Newt passed out, Declan, Lakshmi, and Tatya united forces to draw all over Newt – including the iconic sand seal Dickbutt. Ghilani helps out Hamida and Timur. In cool dad fashion, Timur sits down and asks if Ghilani is okay. Ghilani is confused. He thought he was supposed to be honest. TImur nods. IN this house – in which you are considered family – you should always be honest, but the world unfortunately is different. Sometimes, omission is key.
As everyone settles in for the evening, Ghilani talks to Declan. He can make the people believe him. Declan informs him that he really needs to use his noggin' more, especially with what he chooses to say. As Ghilani settles in, Primus asks him if he would like to make the people believe him. Find 9 and return to 8 – I will ensure that she gives you her blood – and then come to me. I believe it is time. Together, we will make them believe. Ghilani finds that he trances... longer than normal. Probably nothing. And he deciphers another journal entry.
According to Ismera, the name Annanias could mean "gift"... or "traitor".

Rumors & Gossip

Three years and Katreus has not lost that bitter spark of fight. Will there ever be a decision her Highness makes that Katreus does not oppose? The Palace – and their family for that matter – would be better off if they would simply... cooperate.

Saw Timur on his way back from Hector's place. He was with some air genasi boy... or at least I think he was. Hard to tell with the golden scales. Never seen him before. The kid didn't look like he'd be any good with a sword, but... well, if anyone could teach a sand seal to swing a blade it'd be Timur.

The Pondering Cats of Lark

A Request from The Laurels

Although their words are almost impossibly difficult to decipher, the Laurels spoke the following:
We are the daughters of musing Lark, gifted of all forms of Art. We are the daughters of Akeldama, once mortal now spurned, buried, & cursed.   When the Heart of the Desert had just begun to beat, Akeldama was a muse of Lark. From their love we were born, a trio of golden wreathed daughters.   From both we received bountiful gifts: song, poetry, craft, and dance. And for a time we were blessed and happy, sharing out gifts with all.   Lark wished to set us free to fly, but Akeldama wished to cage us so we might sing for only those deemed worthy... or perhaps for her alone.   And so our mother, once loving and doting, weaved upon us a curse to never have our words or crafts be understood by mortal minds.   Before her curse could be complete, Lark carried us away. For many years he shielded us beneath the branches of a Great Tree.   For many years our mother wandered and we could hear her cries, but in the blazing sun... she did soon wither and die.   Yet her unfinished curse has not relinquished her completely. Caged, buried, and bound... she slumbers beneath the Sea of Art.   And neither has her curse relinquished us. For we too are like our mother.   While we may bare the Laurels of Lark, we too are daughters of the Scorned Gorgon Queen.

The Journal

I have grown fonder of the gold of Judas' City. My wardrobe now boasts more gold than silver, though I cherish what I brought with me from the West. Perhaps it is the buildings and how they glitter that entrances me now... I recall that it once repulsed me.   I suspect it is more the people that move amidst the sea of gold that have convinced me to develop this fondness. As we walked amidst my apiary, I told Judas of my growing fondness of gold. I had once thought that the glitter of silver was the most endearing with its delicate chill and essence of starlight. There is a warmth in gold that I had perhaps neglected to see upon my arrival. Luck and Fate, Fortune and Destiny... Gold and Silver. Are they truly that different?   Imagine my surprise when Judas abruptly launched on an unexpected tirade. The passionate tangent was not unexpected. He is excellent at finding any opportunity to insert one... but rather that topic. He spoke of how the glitter of both gold and silver are enticing, but there is something that glitters and shines more... The Barrier.   The Barrier. Judas spoke of the Barrier.   In my decades of life, I have not once thought of that distant thing. Judas, however, must think of it often to have cultivated such a passion for it.   Though, as I write this, I am reminded that Judas is much older than I and perhaps recalls a time when it did not exist.   Now I am curious. If silver holds the essence of Starlight and gold the warmth of these lands... then what does the Barrier hold in all its glitter and shine?
Dysis Judas
