Magic Detection Oil

Magic detection oil is a red oil that glows and heats up in the presence of magic. This oil is one of the few concoctions that does not need to be used or applied. Its effects are continuous for as long as the oil is safely contained.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

When the oil is within 5ft of active magic, the following effects activate:

• Emit 5ft of dim light
• Emit a growing warmth

These effects are continuous for as long as the oil is safely contained, and their activation does not expend the oil.
For every minute that the oil is within 5ft of a source or field of magic, the user must make a Luck check, adding the EP cost of the spell or magical effect if relevant. On a failed check, the following effect activates with a 5ft radius:

• Deal 11 fire damage

After this effect is activated, the oil is consumed.

Manufacturing process

Chop and roast 1 measure of ordeal beans. Cover with 10 measures of coconut oil and heat gently for 10 minutes without allowing it to boil. Take off the heat and allow to infuse for 50 minutes. Strain into a glass bottle and seal.

History

In the days of its early manufacturing, some of the more ambitious dwarf customers chose to apply it directly to their skin and beards to immediately alert them to the presence of magic. This ended catastrophically when the oil ignited after prolonged exposure to magic, engulfing them in flames.
