Black salve is a topical ointment which is used to cure ailments. It was produced as safer alternative to its predecessor, escharotic black salve, but its inflated price following further manufacturing has given it limited marketable value.

Manufacturing process

Bloodroot is ground together with a thick oil base until well combined, and slowly diluted with more oil, whilst the heat is carefully maintained in a sandbath, until the salve is formed.

Significance

The costs associated with neutralising the caustic effects of escharotic black salve consequently made the new, safer black salve more expensive and hard to come by than many other alternatives, such as bay bags and pulmonary remedies. Whilst it still sees some use in countries where marshmallow and laurel berries are not readily available, it is by no means the ideal, affordable cure that it was intended to be.
