Nanites

Created after almost a decade of research and collaboration between biomedical engineers at Iowa State University and the engineers at the Zenido Studios Innovation lab, nanites represent a leap forward in both biomedical research and nano-technology.

Gaming Technology

The primary goal for the initiating the research with Iowa State's researchers had been creating a state-of-the-art gaming controller. The nanites were developed with the intent to create a controlled dreamlike state in the players. By stimulating specific locations of the brain in a specified sequence, the player's brain can read the pulses as a specific type of feedback and provide the appropriate response to the player.   The player receives a few items with their gaming console that interact with the nanites to create the full immersion. In addition to the console, which serves as the central nanite controller, there is a soft cap that provides localized control to the nanite clusters in the player's brain and throughout their body. The nanites themselves are delivered through a powdered drink mix similar to a protein shake. The player mixes a shake each day that they login to play the game and the nanites are initially activated by the water in the mixing process. Once the shake is consumed, the nanites connect to the controller and receive their orders. If a nanite looses connection to the controller or is damaged beyond it's limited ability to repair, it is programmed to make its way back into the stomach or digestion tract in order to be easily expelled in the player's waste. Disabled nanites may also be expelled via sweat or other bodily fluids when they cannot make their way to the digestion tracts.

Medical Technology

A side-benefit found during testing was the use of the nanites in targeted treatments of many illnesses and disorders, especially those in the brain. During early human trials of the nanites, doctors monitoring the trials discovered a subject with an unknown early stage cancer of the brain. After discussing the cancer's impact on the nanites and the interaction in the tester, the doctors agreed to allow the tester to continue with a modified version of the intended trial. A small portion of the gaming nanites were given a payload of nano-compounds of medicines which they delivered to the sites of the cancerous cells enroute to their game control sites. The compounds attacked the cancerous cells in a similar way to traditional chemotherapies. As a result, the doctors were able to eradicate the cancerous cells without affecting the intervening biological material, resulting in almost no chemotherapy side affects.
