Koinos, Thetima Settlement in Draconis | World Anvil

Koinos, Thetima (KOI-nōs, The-TI:-ma)

Koinos is the capital city of Thetima, a small kingdom bordering the East Coast of Draconis. It is an old kingdom with several hundred thousand years of history. The city itself is seeped in some of the most mythical tales, drowning in millenia of old traditions and overflowing with ancient relics of long forgotten years.

The Draconics

There are some Draconics in the surrounding area that have seen the original founding of the city, and have watched it grow and increase. They saw the original The Koinos Palace being built, saw the hundreds of battles that took place over the land, and are still watching it now.

Many Draconics laugh as they watch the people put on their shows and mock battles, amused by the humans poor memory and lack of detail in every historical event. Some small Draconics however are sometimes seen roaming the streets or flying above, as if they want to take part in the festivities too.

The People

The Koinons are either slightly less or considerably more terrified of the Draconics than other cities and towns because they spend somewhat more time with them. The people in the city have several churches and shrines dedicated to these beasts. The ceremonies done by priests thousands of years ago are still being done and many people will walk by a Draconics cave (if they even dare pass by it) in silence out of fear and respect.

Some people even claim to be the prophets of these beasts and claim that they will speak their will to the people. However, this usually doesn't last very long and are soon eaten or burned alive. By the people or the Draconics.

Government

The government is a monarchy with the king having nearly absolute power. The only thing that's stopping him are his advisors, who have the power to vetoe a law with a unanimous vote.

The king is usually established based on a royal lineage with the eldest son inheriting the crown once his father deems him worthy, dies, or the advisors unanimously vote for the son to take his father's place. However, this vote can only happen once the son is 18.

Below the king and his advisors are the nobility, who are known for stealing from the hard working lower classes and providing stability to the government. Most of the nobility have some royal blood, and are elegible for the throne.

If the king slips up or makes a law they do not agree with, it would not be very hard to bribe the advisors to vote off the king and every single heir. The advisors would then come together and make a decision on who shall be the next king, which is usually one of the nobility with royal blood

Points of interest

In Koinos, the main attraction is the palace. A building with a wonderous mixture of past and present. It has been rebuilt, torn down, and rebuilt for millenia. It has seen countless battles, an endless number of people go in and out of its walls, and decades worth of mysteries to unfold.

Another attraction in Koinos are the small, quaint villages. Many of these villages take on old architecture and pretend to be from the years of old, and escort the tourists through their towns, throwing plays, taking them through market square, where they'll be sold spices, cloths, and trinkets, as well as putting on the occasional mock battle.

There are several other attractions throughout the city, many of them being either historical sites or museums dedicated to famous battles held there through the years. However, there are a few places that tourists here about, but never go. Rotten cabins, dilapidated huts, cursed manors--these are places only the most daring go. Because who knows what ancient beings might be in them.

Tourism

There are quite a few people who visit Koinos. They will come for the bards, who spin rapturous tales of the Draconics of old; the bakers, who sell foods made from family recipes whispered from generation to generation; and the places full of quiet remorse that mourn the passing years.
